'Britain's Got Talent': Jonathan Antoine Reveals Secret Breakdown After Weight Taunts

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 26/03/2012 13:20 Updated: 26/03/2012 16:37

After Saturday's SuBo moment on Britain's Got Talent, opera singer Jonathan Antoine has become an overnight star.

But the 17-year-old has revealed he has not always been so confident, telling of how he suffered a breakdown just three months before his show-stopping audition.

Jonathan - who has scored nearly half a million views on YouTube for his rendition of Andrea Bocelli's The Prayer with partner Charlotte Jaconelli - suffered weight jibes at the hands of school bullies.

“Ever since I was quite small I’ve had weight problems and the bullying was related to that. People would be nasty about my weight and say nasty words," he said.

"I sort of had a nervous breakdown back in October. And at that point I left the school I was at. Me and school just don’t get on."

Jonathan also told of how he does not feel pressured into losing weight after the taunts he received.

"Yes [I would like to lose weight] but it would be because I should lose weight to be healthy,’ he said.

"I am the way I am and I always will be - if other people don’t like me, then that’s their choice but I quite like me.

"Singing is what I love and doing, Britain's Got Talent has been fun and made me happy."

A spokesperson for Britain's Got Talent ensured us they were providing the right support to Jonathan in the light of Susan Boyle's breakdown in 2009.

“Jonathan chose to enter the competition and is enjoying his time on the show and his family are supporting him fully. We are aware of Jonathan's circumstances and have been closely involved in discussions about his welfare with his family.

“Thames has long experience of dealing with people who choose to audition for entertainment shows. The welfare of contestants is our key priority and we work with them to provide what help and support is needed. The series celebrates British talent and gives ordinary people the chance to showcase their individual abilities and transform their lives."

Show insider added: “Jonathan has been given the all-clear by his own psychologist and BGT's team too. He and his family are getting full support from BGT.”

After the singer appeared on Daybreak this morning, he took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.

"Messages from people just keep pouring in, it's overwhelming, had a lot of fun on daybreak, thankyou again to everyone <3," he tweeted.

After seeing a million posts comparing this young man to Susan Boyle (in terms of talent) I have to finally respond. Susan Boyle is a very, very good singer - there's no doubt about it. Jonathan Antoine is several orders of magnitude above her in terms of natural ability. 17 year old boys do not generally sing anwhere near this kid's range of expression. This is a truly unusual voice and he will be able to take it to the very top of the operatic world if he continues training. Some people are just born with an exceptional gift when it comes to singing. It has to do with a lot of physical characteristics - the size of the sinuses, shape of the skull, length of the vocal cords etc. No amount of training can change those things. You can train to be a good singer. You are born to be a great singer. The tone of his voice is exceptional and very rare.
This is not a slam at Susan Boyle. As I said, she's a really good singer. But she's not even close to Jonathan's league. I have every confidence that however things turn out on this TV show, he is well on his way to international stardom.

Has anyone told him he is healthy carrying all that excess weight?
Does anyone need to tell him that?
His talent as a singer is immaterial vis-a-vis his overall health
and I hope the psychologists are able to help him confront his
weight issues. Self-denial is a killer.

He shouldn't have been bullied but he is most definitely at a life shortening, unhealthy weight. His joints, especially hips and knees, are carrying a huge strain and his mobility will be affected if he doesn't drop some serious poundage. He needs proper medical help to get rid of some of it. I hope his psychologist is exploring his relationship with food with him, rather than addressing the bullying and self esteem in isolation. They are directly related.
Great voice though. The girl has a really good, clear voice too.

I hate bullies so carry on singing Jonathan and when you have a million pound in the bank go back to your old school and just smile at those who bullied you because they will be jealous of your success.

With all due respect to Simon and the crowd, it doesn't matter of Jonathan does well on that show or not. This is not just a contest winning voice. This is a world-class, operatic voice and Jonathan is well on his way to being the toast of the Classical music world. The fact that he is only 17 is truly mind-boggling. I have seldom been so moved. To see this shy, awkward, bullied kid suddenly let go and have that voice come out is truly awe-inspiring. I must have watched it 20 times and it gets me each and every time. He is also really fortunate to have a great friend in Charlotte.
One last thing: he should dedicate his first album to all those bullies in school - all very likely now digging ditches or on the dole - and call the album "The Last Laugh".

Amazing, brought tears to my eyes... Note to Simon Cowell: Never judge a book by its cover....

Simon Cowell knew Jonathon Antoine's singing ability before he walked on the stage. He has been posting his singing on the internet You Tube to indifferent response since he was 15, and that is where a talent scout for Britain's Got Talent found him.. Simon's words before, and actions during, the performance were very measured. The producers even had Jonathon wear a T-Shirt for the performance, although he wears a proper jacket or waistcoat in his self uploaded performances. One thing that bothered me was the choice of a song, which did not show Charlotte's ability. On another song posted to You Tube, All I Ask of You, shows that she also has a great voice.

Simply an amazing voice. With a little bit of training, he could be quite the star in the world of opera. Such talent at only 17!!

Keep loyal to your partner Charlotte, as you said you went as a duo stay as a duo.
Good luck

I wish people would'nt judge other's by looks (makes me sick) so shallow!! I used to like Cowell, but no more, he opens his big gob about time someone filled it for him. Such a shallow man.

I don't know, I think he is just extremely blunt.

Nah - it was a set up. The entrants go through layers and layers of production assistants before they make it to the stage in front of Cowell. He knows in advance when something good is coming along and can 'look surprised' accordingly!

Shame on Cowell for his obnoxious, prejudiced, smugness before he gave this incredible young man a chance. I cried like a baby. It was the birth of a star.

A voice to be listened to!
Still a bit raw and in need of some coaching but he has now guaranteed himself a great career- as soon as he is out of Cowell's clutches!
Now for real sensational entertainment wouldn't it have been great if the girl;Charlotte Jaconelli had his voice and he had sung like she did!
