The resignation of Peter Cruddas as Tory party-co-treasurer is arguably the biggest scandal to rock the coalition since it was formed two years ago - but it's not the first and unfortunately there's nothing new in governments being undermined by accusations of sleaze.

It follows most recently Dr Liam Fox’s relationship with best man Adam Werritty, itself merely the latest in a long line of scandals that have made UK politics rather colourful over the last twenty years.
