Tibetan Protester Sets Fire To Himself In India Ahead Of Chinese President Visit (PICTURES)

A Tibetan has set fire to himself in protest over the ownership of the Tibet region in New Delhi, India, ahead of a visit by Chinese president Hu Jintao.

In the midst of a protest against the Chinese government's controversial treatment of Tibet outside the Indian Parliament, a Tibetan man emerged engulfed in flames, shocking the surrounding protesters.

Having doused himself with a flammable liquid, the man ran ablaze through the crowds, shouting before he collapsed.

Onlookers beat him with flags and poured water on the flames in an attempt to put them out. The man’s clothes and skin were left burned and charred.

Police took the man, identified as Jampa Yeshi, a Tibetan exile, to a local hospital, where he is receiving treatment for burns on 90% of his body.

His condition remains critical.

The protest came ahead of President Jintao's appearance at an economic summit with representatives from fellow emerging economies Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa later this week. More than 600 protesters marched on the parliament building, many of the carry placards highlighting Tibet’s independence from China.

China's ownership of Tibet is one of the longest-running political feuds in the world. Self-immolation is a common form of protest for Tibetans, particularly monks.

Yeshi is the second man to set fire to himself in India this year over the issue. In China, there have been a reported 25 similar protests, many of them involving self-immolation by monks.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Indian police arrested scores of Tibetan protesters after the incident.

The organisers of the protest said that the self-immolation was not planned.

"We have no idea how this happened, but we appreciate the courage," Tenzing Norsang of the Tibetan Youth Congress told AP, adding that "Hu Jintao is responsible for what is happening there".

"This is what China faces unless they give freedom to Tibet," he said.

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, Philippa Carrick, the chief executive officer of the Tibetan Society in London, said that the incident in India "is indicative of the strength of feeling and solidarity Tibetans in exile hold for their family and kin inside Tibet".

"Sadly it would not surprise me if this was not an isolated incident," she added.

"Until China, through their own will or through pressure from world governments, begins to address the underlying grievances held by Tibetans, such drastic acts will not stop. After 60 years of occupation, Tibetans are clearly signposting they have had enough."

Self-immolation is NOT a " COMMON " FORM OF PROTEST ... IT IS THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE ONE MAKES FOR HIS COUNTRY AND CAUSE ...

PPLEASE CORRECT THIS ASSUMPTION AND HONOR THOSE WHO GIVE THEIR LIVES FOR RIGHT !!!

MORE THAN ANY SOLDIER WASTING THEIR IN HOPELESS BATTLE FOR SOME STUPID POLITICIAN ...

I can't believe that people stood by and took photos - the man was on fire for goodness sake. Shame on you for not helping.

I am an Indian citizen. I have nothing against tibeteans but I think Tibet is one of the big hurdles for peace between india and china. Tibeteans should not use Indian territory for protest against china. They can live in India but if they want to protest against chinese rule, they should cross over to china. India and China have border disputes but they can be resolved. India should not get entangled in tibet conflict. it has got nothing to do with india. I hope India always remember the golden rule of first prime minister of India- Partnership and friendship with all but alliance with none.

Why the US has imposed economic sanctions on Cuba for being comunist whereas they're shaking hands with China?

I think it's because we benefit from China and get cheap labor.

Maybe their size has something to do with this. It is difficult to ignore the elephant in the room no matter how hard US tried.

The million dollar question of course is will foreign governments pressure China to cede control or will one man’s actions today have all been in vain?

Haven't they discovered the use of fire-extinguishers or water hoses there yet ?!?!?

The Fire Department has those, not the protesters.

Whoever wrote this should have proofread their work before submitting it. Or the editor should have paid better attention.
On the subject of the article, the photo is very dramatic and scary. Tibet should be given its rightful freedom. China should realize that they are not making many fans with the way they treat their own people and the history of Tibetans.

“The arrogance of Authoritarian Fascist in China!

Why do they continue to bury the story of Tibet! These images the most chilling to date.

China's abysmal "human rights" record at home makes their words irrelevant abroad.

First, they won't allow Tibetans to have pictures of the Dalai Lama, Yet, have a giant picture of their "Saintly" Mao in Tiananmen Square. This man killed millions of his own people, as many as Hitler and Stalin! Yet, as Russia and Europe set the history books straight who these mass murderers were! China continues to court 20th century oppressors such as Hitler, Stalin and Mao's ideology. As well as deny the Tiananmen Squ. protest and tragedy existed.

As the World stands by with their head up their butts! The near Genocide of the Tibetans will also be on China's list of atrocities!”

Possibly the most disturbing image I have seen in a long time. He is still alive...that is also amazig.
04:13 PM on 03/26/2012
Highly unlikely he will be alive for long, given the extent of the burns (90%). I can't help but think that such courage would have been better utilized by living than choosing to die, but it's his choice and I hope he's at peace.

..... a far more haunting reality for Tibetans living out of their homeland, often without citizenship and for those still in Tibet as China steamrolls a strong and deep people and culture.
This is an act of deep despair and perhaps of deep hope that people witnessing this will bring about change.
Unfortunately China is a very big machine.
