A student has been jailed for 56 days after posting offensive messages about Fabrice Muamba on Twitter.

British student Liam Stacey has been jailed for 56 days after posting offensive messages about Fabrice Muamba on Twitter.

The 21-year-old student admitted inciting racial hatred last week at Swansea Magistrates' Court after posting messages including "LOL… He's dead."

Stacey posted the sick comments while Muamba lay collapsed on the football pitch during a match between Tottenham and Bolton Wanderers.

The Swansea University biology undergraduate was tracked down and arrested following the offensive posts.

One of Liam Stacey's vile tweets

Stacey wept as he was handcuffed and led away into a holding cell below Swansea Magistrates' Court.

On Tuesday District Judge John Charles said the tweeted were "vile and abhorrent", adding: "In my view there is no alternative to an immediate prison sentence."

Last week Stacey appeared at the same court to admit the charges. He was said to be close to tears in court as he heard he could be jailed for the offensive message on the social networking site.

Gareth Jones, defending, said Stacey "is completely ashamed of his behaviour that evening".

He added that the student felt "genuine remorse" for his actions and was not a racist person.

He has since been suspended from university with a spokesperson saying: "The student remains suspended from the university pending the conclusion of our disciplinary proceedings."

The court was told the biology student had been drinking before the online outburst.

Doctors have said the footballer is making "encouraging progress" following his cardiac arrest.

A statement from Barts and the London NHS Trust and Bolton Wanderers Football Club released on Monday said his condition was "serious but stable": "Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital, where his condition is serious but stable.

"He continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery. Over the weekend, he has been able to sit out of bed for a short time, watch television and has begun to eat.

"However, he will need to continue to be closely monitored by the medical team at the London Chest for some time.

"His family requests that he receive no more visitors for the moment, outside of immediate family and members of Bolton Wanderers Football Club."

Tweeters were quick to react to the sentencing, with some saying a custodial term seemed extreme. Take a look at the reaction below.

It's the most basic of elementary maturity. Just because you can, does not mean you should. It is unlikely that this man would have run through the stands screaming the same words he tweeted. The anonymity and most-time zero accountability of things like twitter are for cowards. Period.

For those of you who condone the jailing of this guy, I'll just say this:
I find every comment on this post offensive, therefore you must all go to jail.

Such a shame that other cases can't be dealt with so quickly and justifyingly as this one did!!!

That's ridiculous. This is the same country that sent Tony Martin to jail for protecting his farm, while letting serial burglars & thugs off the hook with barely a slap on the wrist.

I absolutely do not agree with his comments and I think they were disgusting and wildly insensitive, however there is that little thing called...freedom of speech. I personally don't think he should get jail time for this. I'm just saying.

There is such a thing as freedom of speech, however you shouldn't make comments you don't mean - it's easy to be clever but far more difficult to extricate yourself from the hole you have dug yourself into! What has happened to this young man should be a warning to others using social network sites that what happens there is no different to talking to people in the off-line world. Freedom of speech doesn't equal saying what you like, truthful or not, with no consequences for the speaker. Every action you take has a reaction on anyone involved and no-one lives in isolation.

While not racist in any way, shape or form and I agree what this young man did was abhorrent, there seems to be a dulaity of standards that while white on black abuse is quite rightly punished, it never seems to work in reverse. Dianne Abott has over a period ahs said some of the most racist and offensive things about white people, and she gets away with it. And then there is a Federation of Black Police Officers, which excludes all white colleagues, can you imagine the wailing if there were a similar white only federation? Lets be very clear, racism MUST be stamped out, but lets be very fair!

Too harsh for a moment of madness. Possibly wrecked his uni career as well. We all say things we later regret, some community service would have been of more use.

Another injustice.England is a den of iniquity.God forbid if there's another world war.We stood together during the last one,and our love for each other was strong. It wont be like that during the next one.

how can any one go to jail for saying anything on twitter , it dosn;t matter what he said or weather you agree with it or not . its about freedom of speech , which is being eroded in the uk , he should have not plead guilty , and demanded a trial , it takes twelve people to find you guilty , and i for one , would have aquitted him , what happend to british justice ? that used to be the envy of the rest of the world .........................

Freedom of speech does not mean you can hurl words of abuse to another person let alone make racist remarks ! Responsibility goes with that freedom.
08:12 AM on 03/28/2012
you can say what you like on twitter it is indirect , what do you think should happen to muslims that say death to the queen ,should they go to prison too?

"Freedom of speech does not mean you can hurl words of abuse to another person let alone make racist remarks ! Responsibility goes with that freedom."

Yes it does. That's *exactly* what it means...

"it's only words right?" "he didn't hurt anyone" "surely he can express his opinion" please refer back to relatively recent history where words which were deemed harmless were used to attack communities. These seemingly harmless words eventually led to tragic actions against members of those communities. The Jews were a minority in Nazi Germany. Taunts against Jews became accepted, suddenly Jews became the underclass which rapidly led to their near destruction. Thousands of blacks were lynched in the US. If society handles attacks, which attempt to degrade an individual's status by virtue of their race, lightly, we risk becoming a society that tolerates attacks on minorities. The judge by giving a 56 day sentence to this undergrad is essentially saying "no" to tolerating attacks on minority communities. I'm white and I'm certainly one of the huge majority in this country. Just look at the number of white people in higher education and at traditional universities and in professional jobs. I don't think we need protecting. Of course terrorists should be locked up and kept away from causing anyone harm but "Protecting whites" as an argument to dislike non-whites has been used as an excuse for segregation and tyranny for a very long time. Freedom of expression and intelligent debate is encouraged, degrading taunts such as these? Well, history has taught us that we need to come down hard on it.

Not sure what history you have read but if you look at this country's history in the 30s we did not come down hard on Oswald Mosley and his Fascist movement. The reason it did not take root was because of this country's tradition of tolerance (eg to minorities like Jews) and free speech.

If I had been the judge I would have given him a month's community service in an area with large numbers of racial minorities.

Racism has to work both ways. But it doesn't seem to.

This racism thing is just a ploy by the goverment to divert our attention from the way that they are ripping us off.

@vindi boy
Says someone who I am certain is white and middle class, and has never been discriminated against, never heard a racial slur against used against him and never been treated as a stereotype. If you think racism does not exist, it is only because you a propegator of it.

You are certain are you? Well let me tell you in the 50s I was in New Orleans and we wandered into a bar only to be told " Beat it honkies this bar is for coloureds only"
I was not offended in the least, and only remember it as I had never been called that before.
I spent the first year of my working life crawling along a 4 foot high coal seam delivering pit props on the coalface. And the rest in the Merchant Navy. Don't jump to conclusions in future.
