Falkland Islands: Nick Clegg Attacks Argentina's 'Baseless' Nuclear Weapons Claim

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 27/03/2012 11:40 Updated: 27/03/2012 15:19

Nick Clegg has attacked "unfounded" allegations by Argentina that the UK has deployed nuclear weapons near the Falkland Islands.

Speaking at a nuclear security summit in Seoul, South Korea, the deputy prime minister responded to accusations made by Argentina's foreign minister Hector Timerman.

"Before I turn to the issue at hand," Clegg said. "I’m afraid I’m duty bound to respond to the insinuations made by the Argentinian delegation of militarisation of the South Atlantic by the British government."

"These are unfounded, baseless insinuations. As I’m sure our colleague from Argentina knows the United Kingdom ratified the protocols to the treaty in 1969, the treaty referred to by President Pinera which guarantees a nuclear weapons-free zone covering Latin America and the Caribbean.

He added: "We have respected those obligations since 1969 and we will continue to do so."

Timerman told the summit on Tuesday that an "extra-regional power" had deployed a submarine "capable of carrying nuclear weapons" in the South Atlantic.

In February he also stated that his country had intelligence that a Royal Navy Vanguard class submarine had been sent to the area, and demanded to know whether it was carrying nuclear warheads.

"Thus far the UK refuses to say whether it is true or not," he said at the time. "Are there nuclear weapons or are there not?

He added: "The information Argentina has is that there are these nuclear weapons."

The Ministry of Defence has refused to either confirm or deny the deployment of a submarine with a spokesperson saying: "We do not comment on submarine deployments."

Tensions between Argentina and Britain have been simmering for months as the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War approaches.

The rhetoric from both London and Buenos Aires has died down in recent weeks, but the spat in Seoul is just the latest in a series of diplomatic shots.

Argentina reacted angrily to the recent deployment of the Royal Navy's most advanced destroyer HMS Dauntless (pictured below) to the region, as well as the decision to send Prince William to the Falklands in his capacity as a RAF search-and-rescue pilot.

Britain has condemned the decision by Argentina to ban Falkland Islands-flagged ships from docking at its ports, as well as its attempts to raise the issue of the territory's sovereignty at the United Nations.

Clegg also used his speech to disclose that the UK had been protecting its borders since 2001 with hi-tech equipment to detect illicit trafficking into the UK of radiological and nuclear material.

“We have been using cutting edge technology for over a decade to guard our borders against a nuclear terrorist threat. It is time to share that information so we can all raise our game," he said.

"Our groundbreaking new forensics lab will further enhance our ability to deal with nuclear and radioactive crimes and means terrorists have no place to hide.”

You really don`t want to know.

As a Canadian I do know for sure that about 15 years ago we purchased used subs from Britain and I heard lately that one of them FINALLY fired a missile!!! Up until now they have been in drydocks for repairs or starting on fire and being towed to port.

Please note we do not hold this against our British friends. Our Navy was a joke before that.

Given that the UK has a nuclear armed sub permanently at sea, somewhere in the world's oceans, then I am not sure what great relevance it is exactly where it is located ??

The Argentinian Government is not aware of the history relating to the Falklands or are they?. In fact they were never part of Argentina, prior to becaming British they were French. Argentina was not even formed as a country in those days at about 1830 It is peculiar to notice these teutonic sounding names Timerman(Timermann), like the president. Could they be the descendants of those who fled to Argentina after the end of the second world war or even perhaps remnants of the failed coup in Mexico all those many years ago?. They can huff and puff as much as they want, they can make it as difficult as they possibly can, the more they do the more resolute the Brits will be to be on the side of the underdog.

Argentina´s first local national government was formed in 1810.
Argentina´s independence from Spain took place in 1816.
Prior to being invaded by the British, the islands were occupied by Spain, who conceded the souvereignity of the territory to the independent Argentina.
When the British invaded the islands in 1833, there was an argentine governor and argentine population.
It is peculiar to notice that the President´s maiden name is Fernandez, that´s spanish, unlike her late husband´s name, Kirchner, maybe "teutonic" but also probably jewish.
Timerman (with only one n) is definitely jewish descent. And what´s the point about that anyway?
Most of the facts you take for real, are not.
The underdog, in this case, is Argentina, trying to get things right against a militarily stronger country.

You are well versed in History as written on your side. Argentina was not functional as a government and as a nation long after the british defeated the spaniards and took over the Falklands. The Spaniards were invaders and massacred the aborigenal population and this tradition was carried on with the many thousand who disappeared during the troubled times. It is a question of history whether Argentina belongs to aborigenal population or the invaders. So you see it is all a question of timing and the timing is now that the Falsklands are British no matter what you say do huff and puff and resovle to isolate the inhabitanys by negating theri ships to dock in south american ports. The fact is that the present population is mainly mad up of British descendants and it is up to them to decide their destiny. Invading the Falklands withouth a war decalaration was an act of aggression which was repulsed with equual determination to reinstate the status quo. The Falklands are some 290 miles from the shores of Argentina, this can not be construed as your back yards. These are the facts whether you like it or not and nothing will change in the foreseable future.

For goodness sake keep head prefect Clegg away from any important politics and certainly any foreign policy statements - we have a Foreign Secretary and a Prime Ministerjust for that.

Nick Clegg is in La-la land when it comes to anything importants.

Why didn't Nico announce that all foreign aid to Argentina was to be stopped immediately and that Argentina whould be taken to the internation court if they persisted in impeding or interfering with British ships?

Stevenaive should stop commenting on other people's comments and focus on what he thinks - might be more productive.

The Argies can't moan about HMS Dauntless....she's still alongside in Portsmouth Naval Base!!

It's time that this country withdrew its aid to Argentina and from all the other tin pot Sth Americans who support Argentina and its baseless claims.

Yes. I know Brazil has overtaken GB in the economic markets but it is selling its soul to the devil that is China to do so.

And what was Britain doing when it so meekly haded over the residents of Hong Kong to the Chinese Communists ?
14:51 on 28/03/2012
Check your history pal. The UK had a 99 year lease on Hong Kong, which ended in 1997, therefore the UK had no choice but to hand Hong Kong back when the Chinese asked for it. The Falklands is totally different. It was under british control for many years before Argentina ever existed. Argentina's only real claim is based on the geographical position of the islands. The reason they made any claim, and invaded, was due to their wish to exploit areas in Antarctica, before the potential discovery of oil was made.
23:17 on 27/03/2012
In December 1939 HMS Cumberland managed to steam 1000 miles to the River Plate from the Falklands in 30 hours to deal with the Graf Spee - a nuclear submarine can manage 1000 miles in a day submerged so one in the South Atlantic 2000 miles from Argentina could be there in 48 hours if required !!!!!!

It could be there but it couldn't do a thing because the USA would never allow it. This is the USA's back yard and the ever poodlish Brit's know what it says goes. No British priminister will disobey what the presidents orders. Allowing the Brits to nuke anywhere in Latin America would cause such anti American feeling and fallout (in all senses of the world) for the USA in its own region that it would never allow it. Britain doesn't rule the waves the USA does.

If 2012 is real do anyone need the oil?
00:44 on 28/03/2012
What???
20:35 on 27/03/2012
Here we go again!!!Argentina hadn't said a word for years about the islands, since oil has been found they start all this again. The UN should step up and tell Argentina to shut up,the Islanders are happy being British, that should be enough. If they wanted to be Argentine they would've said so,they haven't so that hould be the end of it.So what if the prime minister is sending our armed forces down there,it shows the islanders that we care about them.Too many soldiers died liberating the islands for us to abandon the people that live there,so I'm glad we're sending a show of force. We may be commited elsewhere but there are enough to remind the Argies that we're serious.

The Argentinians invaded British territory, their troops shat in every house they entered, they allowed their hosptital ship to be used in war and they shot two British soldier after they (the Argentinians) put up a white flag. It was a pity Thatcher did not tell them to leave our islands or she would take action against Argentina by whatever means at her disposal and demand reparations.

I cant believe it! Nick Clegg actually said something I agree with. Now that is worrying. Incidentally the notion that if everyone gives up nuclear weapons then no one else will want them is so naive as to be laughable. The one thing Maggie did get right was that the west could not give up nuclear weapons when faced by the truly massive nuclear and conventional forces massed by the Soviet Union. Some nit wits claimed that the Russians would respond favourably if we did. As the late General Montgomery said "The only reason Russia did not invade west Germany and the remainder of Europe was the threat of mutual annihilation if they did so." Dose anyone really suppose that mad dictators in certain parts of the world would lay down their potential for nuclear arms if GB/USA had nothing to combat them? Putin isnt that stupid and neither should we be!
