Petrol Strike: Francis Maude Told To Withdraw 'Jerry Can' Advice By Fire Brigade Union

Posted: 28/03/2012 14:21 Updated: 28/03/2012 14:21

Francis Maude has been told withdraw advice that motorists stockpile petrol on "jerrycans" in preparation for a strike by fuel tanker drivers.

The Cabinet Office minister said on Wednesday morning that "a bit of extra fuel in a jerrycan is a sensible precaution to take".

However the Fire Brigades Union said advising motorists to store cans of petrol in their garages was wrong as it could be illegal as well as dangerous.

The union warned it would "massively increase" fire and explosion risk and the public should be discouraged from doing so.

Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, said: "This is not sensible advice and people should be discouraged from doing so. The general public does not properly understand the fire and explosion risk of storing fuel, even if it was done sensibly.

"Those without garages may be tempted to store fuel in the home. In the event of a fire in the house or a neighbouring property, it would be disastrous.

"It is already against the law to store more than 10 litres of petrol in two five-litre plastic containers in the home. As that amounts to little more than a third of a tank in most cars, the advice is of little practical help.

"There is a real danger the public will start storing fuel in inappropriate ways if the Government is encouraging panic buying and storage. This advice is wrong and must be withdrawn."

The was also criticised by the South Wales Fire & Rescue Service, who said they did "not advise storing petrol in a jerrycan in domestic garages".

Petrol strike threat: We do not advise storing petrol in a jerrycan in domestic garages.

Labour has accused the government of spreading panic as it moves to distance itself from any industrial action by unions.

"It’s the height of irresponsibility for Downing Street to give the impression that people should be panic-buying. They should be using all their efforts to get a settlement," a party spokesperson said.

From most of the posts here you would think from all the kerfuffle that the Minister had actually himself initiated a formal specific announcement on the matter. What happens, as is usual when journalists ask questions of politicians, is that they slip in a question, eg 'Would it make sense to keep some extra fuel as a reserve for emergencies ?' The obvious and wise answer to that specific question is 'Yes' , tempered by a qualification as to how it would be safely stored. Unfortunately in doing so he mis-used the term 'gerry-can' in a generic sense, meaning 'safely in a dedicated metal container' without realising that the small one-gallon or two-gallon authorised containers are not technically gerry-cans which are actually larger (5 gallons).

How many times have you used the word 'hoover' when in truth you have a vacuum cleaner of different manufacture ?

Why weren't we given the chance to stockpile pasties?

I'm delighted that Mr Maude is considered as a frontline spokesman by the Conservatives, particularly now that Michael Gove seems to have a problem in getting access to a microphone to amplify anything he says.
Singlehandedly, our Francis is reminding many why they didn't vote the Tories back in in 1997, 2001 etc. His hilarious performance on Any Questions last Friday, where he displayed all the self-awareness of a garden gnome, was priceless. And it's still available on iPlayer for all to enjoy.

Stupid advice from a stupid man

Talk about spreading panic where none ought to exist. Then top it off with yet more nonsense from a government that had completely lost the plot! You have to assume that the "system" for educating and developing politicians has become so isolated from reality and common sense that the framework is more and more resembling a drifting hulk like the Marie Celeste. I include all main parties in that criticism for they are all shades of the same colour nowadays.

So what if people are sensible about the whole business and only have one jerrycan of fuel just in case? Considering how small the majority of petrol tanks are, it should last out the strike unless you have major commuting, a thirsty engine or a lead foot.

These are the people that are running the country and the tories call labour, how very dare they.

Or, they could stop taxing the Uk public into oblivian with possibly the most expensive fuel in the world, and help ease the whole situation .

If you use gerry cans to store any fuel you need to store it in a secure metal box which is padlocked also if you store fuel in say a garage on attached to your property what about your Insurance Policy is that VALID or NULL and VOID
Only a thought for all those thinking about doing it

You would have thought that the minister would have looked up the Petroleum Regulations before making these comments.

I am a bit rusty on the regulations, but I think the following applies:

Some bedtime reading might have helped http://www.westyorksfire.gov.uk/uploads/assets/media/pdfs/safety-leaflets/7c2d9ba2ac01b406b603ddd897085f1dd71e86f6.pdf and thereare the and another http://www.westyorksfire.gov.uk/uploads/assets/media/pdfs/safety-leaflets/542fda867f1f32cfe4876f3880c5112490db4d07.pdf

For private use, only 2 no. 2 gallon maximum capacity containers can be kept in a single place. The petrol must only be kept cans that are made of metal or of an approved type of plastic can.

The petrol must not be kept in ordinary plastic cans, such as empty orange bottles or even plastic paraffin cans. The cans must be indelibly marked "Petroleum Spirit-Highly Inflammable". There have been cases where people have put petrol from unmarked cans onto fires or into paraffin heaters, not realising it was petrol and they ended up with sever burns.

Using plastic cans that are not of an approved pattern can result in the plastic melting or the flammable vapours permeating through the walls of the cans.

Filling up 5 gallon metal gerry cans is not illegal, although the owner of the filling station can be fined for permitting it if it is not correctly marked, but you cannot store them in your garage as suggested by the minister.

For further advice contact your local Trading Standards office. They may help.
