Steve McClaren To Return? Arsenal To Reinforce Their Strikeforce And More (WEDNESDAY TRANSFER TALK)

Wednesday Transfer Talk

Sound the trumpet, it may be the return of Goldmember. Yes, Steve McClaren, the English-speaking-Dutch-sounding Twente manager is being lined up for a return to the FA, in a technical director role set to be resurrected, report The Daily Mail.

McClaren was England manager between 2006-07, but the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008, which resulted in the ex-Middlesbrough coach getting the sack. He has since won the Dutch league with Twente in 2010, but endured a disastrous stint at Wolfsburg in neighbouring Germany, where he was dismissed after eight months before a risibly brief spell with Nottingham Forest this season.

However The Times say Gareth Southgate, who has been working part-time for the FA, is the leading candidate. A failed manager or a failed penalty taker. Spoilt for choice, eh?

Chopping away at a squad's deadwood is a chore for any manager, but Arsene Wenger may need to polish off his chainsaw as he apparently seeks to reinforce Arsenal's strikeforce.

Andrey Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner, amongst others, are costing up to £23m a year in wages, and The Mail says the Frenchman is eager to bid the trio through the door marked "EXIT".

Remaining in north London, and one man who may be exclaiming "Kerching!" is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is in line for a pay rise less than a year into his Arsenal career, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Yesterday it was Real Madrid and Juventus, today it is Borussia Dortmund who have emerged as potential suitors for Manchester City's Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian is apparently disenchanted at being frozen out, claim The Sun.

Away goals have been a problem for City, and local paper the Manchester Evening News suggest Roberto Mancini is preparing a £100m forward overhaul, chiming with the Dzeko rumours. Best keep an eye on financial fair play too, Roberto.

Finally, on Tuesday it was £8m, today it is £9m at the Laurent Blanc Chelsea auction, pipes up the Daily Mirror. Larry White will be like a blind man who's lost his way if he refuses either offer...
