Tel Phones In To Wembley (VIDEO)

Terry Venables has made a return to football with semi-professional side Wembley FC, the club have announced.

Huffington Post UK Sport was told the 69-year-old will take up a "technical advisor"s role with the team.

Venables said in a club statement: "Managing, coaching and teaching football has been an essential part of my life for over 30 years.

"This opportunity to share my knowledge of decades with an eager group of players and coaches was too important to turn down. If they are willing to learn, I am willing to teach."

"Grassroots football is essential for the lifeblood of the professional game and if I can leave Wembley FC in a better position than I found it then it will be a job well done. It is early days but the signs are encouraging."

Founded in 1946, the club will welcome the ex-England coach to the club's 3,000-capacity Vale Farm stadium ahead of Saturday's home game against Dorking.

The Lions ply their trade in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, and finished 14th last year.

Venables has been out of football since 2007, when he departed his role as England assistant manager with coach Steve McClaren, who was sacked following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

He is best remembered for leading England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, when he oversaw one of the Three Lions' greatest nights as they destroyed Holland 4-1 at the group stage.

A decade previously, he steered Barcelona to the 1984 Primera Liga title after an 11-year wait, and in 1991 guided Tottenham to an FA Cup win.

Wembley FC have signed Venables thanks to their new sponsorship deal with Budweiser (lead partner for the FA Cup).
