Fakhra Younus, Former Pakistani Dancing Girl Commits Suicide 12 Years After Acid Attack (PICTURES)

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 29/03/2012 12:28 Updated: 29/03/2012 12:43

A former dancing girl who was left severely disfigured after acid was hurled into her face, has committed suicide 12 years after the attack.

Fakhra Younus, 33, felt she looked “not human” after the attack, which was allegedly carried out by her then-husband Bilal Khar.

Khar was accused of pouring the corrosive substance over her face as she slept, in full view of the victim’s five-year-old son.

Younus, then 21, was left fighting for her life and has endured 39 separate surgeries since the attack. She had left Khar earlier amid accusations of physical and verbal abuse.

Her nose was almost completely melted making it difficult for her to breathe.

Khar, the son of a former Pakistan governor, was acquitted, but many believe he used his connections to avoid justice, AP states.

Younus jumped from the sixth floor of a building where she was living and being treated in Rome on March 17, having finally decided life was no longer worth living.

Her body has since been returned to Pakistan, reigniting anger over her tragic case.

The former wife of Khar’s father, Tehmina Durrani, became a high profile supporter of Younus.

Durrani, who said Younus’s injuries were the worst she had ever seen on an acid attack victim, said: ”So many times we thought she would die in the night because her nose was melted and she couldn’t breathe.

“We used to put a straw in the little bit of her mouth that was left because the rest was all melted together.”

After Younus’s suicide, Durrani wrote a column in The News, stating: “Her life was a parched stretch of hard rock on which nothing bloomed.”

Durrani also wrote movingly about the "open disgust and contempt by everyone who set eyes on her in Pakistan" and gave heartfelt thanks to the Italian government for providing Younus with care.

News of Younus's death has been received with sadness around the world, with many calling for action over the 8,500 acid attacks reported in Pakistan in the last year.

We shouldn't be waiting for world leaders - ordinary people everywhere need to stand up and work to stop such monstrous actions. Its just plain wrong. So wrong.

Under Islamic traditions, women are just like any other piece of property. Women can be bought, sold, disrespected or disfigured. World leaders like Cameron and Obama will do nothing.

This has got NOTHING to do with Islam. Islam considers such behaviour barbaric. Nowhere in Islamic law are acid attacks condoned - not under ANY circumstances. Moreover, Muslims are NOT allowed to take the law into their hands. This is wrong, and every Muslim with any level of conscience will stand up against it. Acid attacks need to stop.

Bring the abuser to justice, let him serve time for his action. This may prevent others from doing the same thing if there were consequences...

Islam is a human rights violation masquerading as a religion. If they did to black men, what they do to women, the world would be up in arms! But it's only women...

Sorry my friend, that's your personal opinion bordering on prejudice. Diversify your knowledge of the world and its history.....your eyes/mind will open up to the fact that 'human rights violations" are not the monopoly of any single religion or group! Be good. COI- None, I do not practise Islam and do not think it is perfect like any religion for that matter.

These idiots need to be brought to trial and justice otherwise the Pakistani judicial system will always be a joke!

Well, actually not only the Pakistan courts, but also the US judicial as well, when Hollywood celebrities and especially Lindsay Lohan avoid jail after committing crimes that non celebrities would be sentenced to 10 years for!!!

For once, what is sometimes believed to be Islamic law might serve as a punishment - pouring acid over the face of the culprit and letting the punishment fit the crime.

But who did commit the crime? And is the current legal system up to punishing the perpetrator?

God forgives. The Bible also says obey man's laws and to accept man's punishment to pay for your crime. This so called man should be punished by women.

Normally i would tell everyone that we shouldnt hold an entire country responsible for this isolated incident, normally i would say come on guys this is an act of a madman. This however is not an isolated case carried out by one madmen, after 8500 cases in one year i think its safe to say this is a country which has a major defect in how is raises its men. I think the noble honorable men of this country need to be men and condemn those who still believe in this practice against their women. This country needs to do some real soul searching about how it treats their women. I mean what is more tragic is the guy was let go, what does that say about the leadership? Horrible incident which i hope will bring some major changes in the culture.

How could anyone live with themselves after something so monstrously horrific to another human being? The most appallingly tragic part of all this is the micky-ficky who disfigured this beautiful young woman got away. Folk may not believe in GOD; but I know HE has something for folk who think they are above the law. Man's, yes. But GOD? And if we as fellow human beings were kinder to one anoher; perhaps this young woman would not have been made to feel she was some sort of monster. I weep for us as so-called humans. We want merch but show none. Not all. Of course not. But it ain't the kind and gentle people who go around wreaking havoc upon others. May GOD have mercy on us. At least HE's capable of it. Unfortunately man is sadly lacking. Help us, LORD. PLEASE. Life.

STOP the acid attacks everywhere, worldwide! Angered even in the USA men who witness crimes against women and want to speak up are victimized by acid attacks by those who want their vision to be excluded from court proceedings, and what kind of society does not REVOLT against pizza delivery service/food delivery having been acid attacked for some to STEAL food, while destroying lives, only to have the franchises SUED for Millions of dollars, when they had NOTHING to do with the crime except to offer someone a way to earn a living such as Louisiana USA year 2009?!?!
WTF; when I heard the Number of attacks recently against women... this one around the year 2000?

I would like to see the war criminal treated with the same inhumanity they treat their women and shown no mercy. I think human rights should keep out of war matters
