Fuel Strike: Panic-Buying Petrol Causes Forecourt Chaos (PICTURES)

Long queues are forming outside petrol stations across Britain as panic-buying among motorists escalates in the face of a possible tanker strike.

Some forecourts have declared that their stocks have been run dry by panic buying, while police in Dorset ordered a number of petrol stations to close over fears of a major fuel shortage.

A petrol station in Southbourne, Bournemouth was closed by police, after an argument broke out in the queue of cars waiting to enter the forecourt.

A motorist in Ilkley, Yorkshire, was asked to leave the forecourt of one garage after he snatched the pump out of the hand of a female driver, an eyewitness said.

Chief Inspector Nick Maton of Dorset Police said “The actions of some motorists in queuing irresponsibly at petrol stations is causing danger to other road users.

“Police are taking action, requesting petrol stations to close temporarily in order to keep traffic flowing.

He added: “Once the queues have dispersed, the petrol stations may re-open for short periods.”

There are concerns that despite peace talks between unions and oil tankers, the threat of a national fuel strike is likely over Easter weekend.

In London, fire engines were called to a petrol station on the King's Road after a van driver overfilled his tank, causing fuel to spill all over the forecourt.

One van driver in Leeds said he had been waiting for 30 minutes to get fuel while in Harrogate a forecourt on the outskirts of the town had run out of fuel by 11.30am.

The government has come under fire, with accusations flying at Francis Maude for starting the chaos, after he suggested that motorists keep their tanks topped up and fill up jerry cans in case conciliation talks failed.

Jon Hall, chief fire officer for both Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Gloucestershire Trading Standards, called for the Tory minister to withdraw his comments, concerned over householders stockpiling petrol in anticipation of a possible tanker drivers' strike

"This is potentially extremely dangerous as petrol is not only highly flammable, but is also explosive under some circumstances.

"In addition, there are strict legal requirements for the storage of this type of fuel and a householder may commit an offence by not storing petrol safely."

Police tell a manager of a Total station to close

The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents about 5,500 garages, blamed advice from the Government on keeping tanks topped up

A spokesman said: "This is exactly what we didn't want - people panic-buying. Deliveries are still being made to garages and we are advising people to continue with their normal buying habits."

Halfords have said that sales of jerry cans have "soared" with sales up 225% compared to last year, and motorists buying in "the thousands."

“Sales started rising dramatically after the government issued their warning and advised motorists to fill up” said Halfords commercial director Paul MClenaghan.

However the seven day notification included in strike laws mean that if oil tankers are to stage industrial action over Easter, they need to provide notification by 5pm on Friday.

As conciliation service Acas has announced that talks over the tanker drivers' dispute will not be held before Monday, a strike over Easter weekend seems unlikely.

Acas has said its officials have been in contact with the Unite union and seven distribution companies involved in the row in a bid to convene a meeting and head off the threat of industrial action.

That process should be concluded by Monday and substantive discussions should follow shortly afterwards, Acas announced.

Sales of fuel from panic-buying by motorists just on Wednesday will bring in more than £32 million in extra fuel excise duty.

The AA calculated the figure after petrol sales shot up by 81% and diesel by 43% as motorists flocked to garages across the UK to fill up following advice from ministers.

Meanwhile baggage handlers at Stansted Airport are to strike over Easter in a row over pay, threatening disruption to passengers flying on holiday for the spring break.

Did the 1% really think that the 99% are powerless? Just the threat of a tanker strike caused this much upheaval. The 99% do ALL OF THE WORK. Without us, it all stops. Why let the 1% have all the benefits of our hard work? It is time we cut them out of the game.

These people filling up through panic are complete morons. It's outright stupidity, give me another 50 derogatory adjectives and it still won't do these people justice. To those of us with a ounce of common sense we can see this is a strorm in a tea cup caused by the government playing silly games against the would-be strikers. It my guess they were trying to put them off striking and hoped to rally us against them. Divide and conquer! You can tell it's gone wrong, because initially they were smug and happy to be on TV talking about it, now hey are being sheepish and defensive.

This is the natural reaction of worried people who see the world falling apart before them. You can call it an overreaction, but this is just the beginning. Prices will continue to climb, not of just oil/gas, but for the things we get from elsewhere that needs to be brought in. More and more people will find themselves slipping from lower middle class into poverty...that is just simple math, not a judgement. Paniced people react in illogical ways, with frequency. This will only add to the level of chaos.

As the Chinese curse states, May you live in interesting times.

Or we can finally decide that the current system no longer works and abandon it. Come up with something new. Reject the way things are. Refuse to be part of it any longer.

Or we can all bend over and ask for another.

"Sales of fuel from panic-buying by motorists just on Wednesday will bring in more than £32 million in extra fuel excise duty"

What a load of tripe. The only thing panic buying will do is to bring in the excise duty sooner than usual. The motorist will not use more petrol with the threat of a strike, he will use less. Many people buy petrol on a need-to-use basis, they do not fill up the tank. These people will are simply buying in advance, not buying more. If there is any slight advantage to Government, it could be that this windfall of duty will be taken just inside the current fiscal year and make the 2011-12 sums marginally better.

Claimed irresponsible motorist caused mass buying at pumps, no word of irresponsible government that caused this,( look after number one) your government is not on planet earth???
05:38 AM on 03/30/2012
What we have are persons running the country who have absoloutely no clue whatsoever on running a country, let alone a business. All of this is so childish and pathetic. Mention 'don't panic' and they do and will. This Government, like the last one are totally incapable and inept.

You are wrong, things are going exactly as they want them to. We are all suffering, but they are large and in charge. The 1% owns a greater percentage of the overall wealth than ever before. The Sun King would be jealous of their dominance. We are the ones who seem clueless, if you ask me. We just keep taking it.

Yeah, but I bet you paid twice what you paid a decade ago. And a decade from now it will double again, and so forth. How long before you cannot afford gas, or food?

well i could say the same thing to you about the cost of food, clothes, electricity, gas bills etc. name something that hasn't gone up in price in a decade?
if everything stayed the same price as last decade then their would be lot more richer people walking around.
so i don't see the relevence in your post.

I found myself yesterday (Wed) very low on petrol so on one hand I did need to put petrol in so I had to make a trip to the garage anyway but I will admit I didn't put my usual £25 in which I usually put in each week, I did fill my car up completely like most other people, I didn't bother with cans or anything like that but I do feel I have a bit more peace of mind knowing my tank is full and if I'm careful I should be able to make it last at least two weeks or just over. I hadn't even thought of rushing to the garage until out shopping late last night at a 24 hr supermarket and seeing the 24 hr Tescos was sold out of fuel at that early stage , well it was worrying so it did make me head to the closest other one which I am glad I did as today everywhere had either sold out or people were waiting for up to an hr to fill up which is crazy!
