Sea Buckthorn: New ‘Superfruit' Helps Weight Loss And Dementia

Sea Buckthorn Superfruit

The sea buckthorn berry – a grape-sized orange fruit grown in the Himalayas – is being touted as the latest ‘superfruit’, which aids weight loss and staves off dementia.

According to Marap UK, the supplier of organic fruits from around the world, sales of sea buckthorn have soared by 30% in the past six months after scientists discovered its powerful antioxidant value.

A study by the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and the Indian Institute of technology discovered that sea buckthorn berries contain a potent mixture of vitamin A, K, E, C, B1 and B2 vitamins. They also found high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, folic acid and flavonoids.

Experts believe its mix of fatty acids signal the body to stop storing fat, and according to leading nutritionist, Dr.Oz, the weight stays off, too.

“What this means for users is that it starts melting away the fat immediately, and it has been scientifically proven to help users keep it off for longer periods than conventional weight loss programmes,” explains Dr. Oz in a statement.

Sea buckthorn oil is already used to alleviate eczema, sunburn, gastric ulcers and urinary tract infections, but it seems their nutrient content is causing a stir among the health conscious and those wanting to boost their cognitive function.

A small helping of 25g of sea buckthorn provides four times the recommended daily allowance of vitamin B12 – the vitamin thought to improve cognitive decline and help prevent the onset of dementia.

Adequate amounts of vitamin B12 helps halve the rate of brain shrinkage (atrophy), which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, a previous study by the University of Oxford and the University of Oslo found.

“Sea buckthorn is a nutrient dense Himalayan berry, rich in antioxidants and vitamins. As part of a healthy diet, it could provide an additional nutritional boost,” nutritionist Kirsten Brooks from Eat Yourself to Health, told HuffPost Lifestyle.

“But people should not get too fixated on these so-called superfoods, as it's best to get an array of different nutrient-rich foods. “

Following another recent study health experts are also hailing the benefits of chia seeds.

According to researcher Dr Wayne Coates from the University of Arizona who dubs himself ‘Mr Chia’, these seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, minerals and antioxidants.

"It's not like other supposed miracle foods that come out only to be dismissed as dangerous months later. You can add it to anything. My wife sprinkles it on our salad. It lowers cholesterol, it reduces joint pain,” Dr Coates said, as cited in the Independent.

The seeds are being reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes, to decide whether they should be allowed into food products.

  • Natural Weight Loss Aids

  • Green Tea

Green tea is rich in the antioxidant called catechin which help speed up metabolism and burn fat quicker. It also contributes towards lowering LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol).

  • Pineapple

Pinapples contain high levels of an enzyme called bromelain that aids digestion and prevents inflammation and swelling in the gut, which can lead to constipation and weight gain.

  • Green Coffee Beans

Green coffee bean extracts help reduce the absorption of fat and glucose in the gut, as well as insulin levels, which improve metabolic function. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/03/28/green-coffee-new-weight-loss-food_n_1384970.html?ref=uk-lifestyle" target="_hplink">Read more about the weight-loss benefits of green coffee beans here</a>.

  • Water

Although drinking water alone won't shift the pounds, drinking a glass of it before you eat will make you eat less and suppress your appetite. It also keep you hydrated throughout the day and will keep hunger pangs at bay, because hunger is mostly driven by dehydration.

  • Eggs

Having an egg for breakfast keeps you feeling fuller for longer as it acts like a bulking agent in the stomach. It also staves off hunger pangs because the protein prevents the blood sugar level spikes, which lead to food cravings.

  • Grapefruit

Eating half a grapefruit before each meal or drinking grapefruit juice three times a day helps aid weight loss. The fruit's phytochemicals reduce insulin levels, a process that forces the body to convert calories into energy rather than fat.

  • Beans

Beans and pulses contain cholecystokinin, a natural appetite suppressant as they stay in the stomach longer. They also help keep blood sugar on an even keel, so you can stave off hunger longer.

  • Cinnamon

A little bit of cinnamon a day can help control post-meal insulin spikes, which make you feel peckish. A recent study by U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that just a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon a day lowered the blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Why don't people just stop eating so much rubbish and exercise more. You just know that this is going to be a very expensive item when it hits the shops.

Sea-buckthorn is quite common around the N European coasts, including those of Britain, you can pick its fruit yourself for free (though you will tear your hands to shreds on the thorns).

Sea Buckthorn is a native plant, not himalayan. The berries have been the source of a refreshing drink for more years than I have, very common in France and Germany as well as Russia although not well known here. There is so much history of its use, however, that sudden discoveries of amazing properties should be treated with caution. There are a few people I know who use the berries readily and are definitely not protected from overweight by them. It's easy to grow, vicious thorns make it a difficult harvest but it produces a huge quantity of berries per bush and takes a long time, six years, to fruit from seed. You need two plants to cross fertilise.

Is there any other resources where we can learn about this sea buckthorn and weight loss? I only know of sea buckthorn oil as seen in the source recommended in the article.

"grown in the Himalayas"? It's a British native wild plant that makes a tough coastal hedge.

A big help to stave off dementia is to stop using aluminum. Researchers have found after doing autopsies on brains that had alzheimers, that the brains had over 80% of aluminum collected in them . We use way to much aluminum from cans of soda and food, to aluminum foil in cooking, aluminum pots with cooking, toothpaste and deoderant. Aluminum soaks into the food and drink, and then after consumption it stores in our brain. Not good!

I've tried every supplement to come long and be touted as "the fat-melting supplement" - you name it - hoodia, everything. Nothing works. Won't be purchasing this, either. A fool and his money are soon parted. Buy it if you want another serving of fruit and you want the anti-oxidants. Don't buy it if you're expecting a miracle out of it.

I agree, everything Dr. Oz has said already about certain supplements/foods to consume to take away body fat has not worked at all.
