Petrol Strike: Dorset Police Tell Stations To Shut Amid Panic Buying

PA/The Huffington Post  |  By   |  Posted: 29/03/2012 13:07 Updated: 29/03/2012 13:07

Dorset Police have asked all petrol stations in the county to shut due to the "irresponsible" actions of motorists panic buying fuel amid fears of strikes.

In a statement given on Thursday afternoon, the force said it was advising members of the public not to panic buy fuel following reports of traffic congestion at petrol stations around the county.

Chief Inspector Nick Maton said: "There is no disruption to the fuel supply in the UK and members of the public should not panic buy.

“The actions of some motorists in queuing irresponsibly at petrol stations is causing danger to other road users.

“Police are taking action, requesting petrol stations to close temporarily in order to keep traffic flowing.

He added: “Once the queues have dispersed, the petrol stations may re-open for short periods.”

Sales of petrol and diesel increased dramatically yesterday as motorists flocked to garages to fill up following controversial advice from the government ahead of a possible strike by fuel tanker drivers.

Petrol sales shot up by 81% and diesel by 43%, according to the Petrol Retailers Association, which represents around 5,500 garages across the UK.

A spokesman blamed advice from the government on keeping tanks topped up, including the much-criticised call by Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude to fill up jerry cans.

"This is exactly what we didn't want - people panic buying. Deliveries are still being made to garages and we are advising people to continue with their normal buying habits."

While Jon Hall, chief fire officer for both Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Gloucestershire Trading Standards, said filling cans with petrol was extremely dangerous and presented a major hazard to firefighters.

"I am really concerned about the prospect of householders stockpiling petrol at home in anticipation of a possible tanker drivers' strike," he said.

Why does anybody think that Cameron is behind this? The government is run by the Treasury which, in turn, is run by the Bank of England. Cameron & Co. are just puppets who take all of the flak.

Why not do what our local garage did and just fix a price of £30 as maximum fill up? Yes there was a continuous but fast-moving queue, and I am praying it is just a storm in a teacup before I have to take my jerrycan for fuel for my lawn mover. But at least I can now get there!

well done mr cameron. engage brain before coming up with such little gems as keep cars filled up with petrol incase of strike by tanker drivers. it's just saying to people go and buy up all the petrol amd garage owners put up prices to make a quick profit.

i saw loads of petrol stations had run out of petrol and closed. those open were queueing onto main roads. the tanker drivers don't need to strike. just ask the government to slip on a banana skin and cause panic buying. the power tanker drivers have. look out olympics what a time to strike.

I think you are sadly mistaken with your comment.
Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude was the government spokesman (pra*t) that advised people to use their own judgement and then recommended they fill up tanks and jerry cans.
So who needs to engage brain now?

one slight problem there, how do you engage a brain when all you have is an empty cavern ???

Utter idiocy or a deliberate action by this government.Whatever the reason this has been wholly mishandled and head/s should roll because of this.PARTICULARLY the main culprit Mr Maude. What a FOOL to suggest filling up a jerry can, what with the obvious dangers involved and thus causing panic amongst the motoring public. It's all well and good the police calling the public irresponsible but this action of 'panic' buying has been bought upon us by the 'irresponsible' comments made by this government. I had no intention of filling my 2 cars up until I saw the huge queues at every petrol station i passed, thus forcing me to fill up just in case the pumps ran dry.As for the police,I bet your last pound, they did exactly the same.
What a shambles.......................
06:08 PM on 03/29/2012
Now do you understand why the people of Scotland want Independance.. They want rid of this shambles of a Tory party once and for all.. The Tories are despised north of the border. Does anyone honestly wonder why.
