'A Third' Avoiding The Olympics And Going Away During The Games To Escape Them

Olympics Escape Plan

Around a third of Britons who have booked a holiday abroad this summer have deliberately chosen their dates so they can avoid the Olympic Games, a study suggested today.

Some 35% of those surveyed have already planned a holiday abroad, and around three quarters of them said the Olympics had affected their departure dates in some way, according to the survey from foreign exchange firm Travelex.

This could equate to around 10 million Britons whose holiday dates are affected by the Olympics when the figures are projected nationally, Travelex said.

More than a quarter of people surveyed who are planning a trip overseas this summer (26%) said they had chosen their departure dates in order to sidestep the Games.

A further 10% of holidaymakers said they had changed the dates of a foreign holiday they had already booked so they could get away before the event begins.

Travelex estimates that around four million Britons are likely to head abroad in the five days leading up to the Games in July.

Popular reasons for the "great Olympic getaway" were wanting to escape the visiting crowds or blanket television coverage, as well as people saying they are not keen on sport.

People living in and around London, Weymouth and Windsor were the most likely to say they would be going abroad, while those in Northern Ireland and Wales were the least likely.

Nearly two thirds of those planning to leave the country said they were heading to Europe, with Spain named as the most popular destination.

Travel agent Bridget Keevil of Travel Stop said: "We have had customers who just want to get away from it all while the Olympics are on.

"We have seen a definite rise in inquiries and bookings for that period - some people have said they want to get as far away as possible - even to places like Vietnam and Thailand."

Some 6% of holidaying Britons said they had booked their time away to fit in with key sporting events.

Around 3% of those who are going abroad said they had been left disappointed after being unable to obtain any tickets for the event, while nearly 2% of those going away are planning to take their children out of school early.

Meanwhile, 14% of people heading abroad said that they would have preferred a holiday in the UK in the absence of the Olympics.
The survey of more than 3,000 people was carried out during the second half of March.

Oh if only I had the cash.......I would be off out of this country like a shot, to a land with no TV during the entire time the Olympics are on. Maybe Lord Coe would pay my fare......he should certainly foot the bill for the amount of cash we're going to lose as a result of this fiasco.

Three years ago, the Republicans went into fits saying Obama "lost" the 2016 Olympics for Chicago...like hosting the games is a wonderful prize for 90% of the people in a host city. This isn't the golden age of major events such as the World Fair where people could descend on a city and actually A) Mostly behave themselves and B) Actually benefit average shopkeepers, hotels, and boarding houses.

The games are a blight for most of us...both those living in host cities and those who are forced to endure constant coverage on at least one TV station and near constant recaps on the others.

What's the rush to go abroad? Londoners, rent your pad out for a small fortune and get out and see some of your own country - spend your hard-earned (or ill-gotten) on some home produced Great British goods, our farmers, brewers, fishemen and hoteliers need your help right now!
BUY BRITISH!

Yeah right and then come home to find your house striped of anything remotely valuable.

Worry not, it'll only be striped if you've rented to LLB

When are you plebs going to realise that the Olympic Games are organised to attract non-paying dignitaries and well knowns from around the globe - Britains are only going to fill the vacancies and pay towards to cost of these freebies.

I have a number of friends who are keen athletes and they applied for tickets for events they are interested in (1500m, 500m etc). What they were offered was an evening programme of early heats for anything but these events.

They have all declined the kind offers and are taking overseas holidays in order to avoid the hype - they will be able to watch what they want on TV.

Well done Britain - keep the minions at bay and feed them peanuts.

Holiday booked to get away over a year ago for the olympic period. If its a choice of crowded trains, queues, expensive drinks and food, packed crowded stands being bumped, nudged and poked, having your wallet and possessions stolen by over lovely eastern european friends, being showered with rain, spilt drinks and pigeon droppings or sitting on a sunny beach with warm clear water and an ice cold mojito I think I chose the better.

thats a good description of everyday life in this country, the olympics are just like our government - there to make the rich richer and the poor to starve. ha ha ha (am 1 of the poor by the way, stroke surviver)

Can't say I blame them. They already have to deal with the Queen's big celebration in June (which the airlines are taking FULL advantage of). Why stick around to be trampled by a bunch of rich foreigners who can't drive on the "wrong side" worth a damned? Come spend your money in NY! The weather will be awesome and the elitists will be in England mucking things up.

No wonder politicians are all so fond of sport. Anyone heard of "Bread and circuses" ? If we as a nation paid as much attention to politics as we do to football etc. we would not be in the mess we are suffering now. Olympics are of little use to anyone living outside London anyway, far too expensive to go and see, even if you could get tickets. I resent paying towards this event.
Having had my rant, I still wish British athletes well but will be stocking up on books to read when TV is taken over during the games.

The Olympics are a no no. Tickets for politicians, overseas VIPs and a raffle for the rest of us. TV will be re-scheduled so we have to eat, drink, and sleep games we have no interest in or watch blank screens or repeats.Road and rail links given priority and gold reserves sent abroad in the shape of medals. No wonder people are going abroad to escape them.

It's the same here in the US. No thought is given to the MAJORITY of people who couldn't possibly care less about these games. Another huge annoyance created by the vocal minority that needs to be skirted, avoided and dealt with.

Many people get a lot out of the Olympics, but please, will the TV companies spare a thought for those of us who arent enthralled by every word said, and every move made with regard to the Games ?

when the uk won the labour goverment said it would be the best olympics ever no matter how much it cost the taxpayers even though it was common knowledge that the uk was in a recession why do they think that the uk citizens would be all in favour at the amount being spent .They should take notice off how the chinese people felt when they were kicked out off there homes and travelling restrictions were impose to stop protests and made to work for peanuts so that the chinese could show off did brown think the general public was all for it i think not still only time will tell

The UK didn't win. London won.

Oh come on Jock.........do you seriously think that holding the Olympics is winning? I am sure a large number of Londoners would willingly send the Olympics to Glasgow because they sure as hell don't want them in London.
