Ed Miliband Dismissed Bradford By-Election Disaster And Says He Will Win Next Election

PA/The Huffington Post UK  |  Posted: 1/04/2012 06:54 Updated: 1/04/2012 08:07

Ed Miliband brushed off Labour's shock defeat in the Bradford West by-election, claiming the party is set for a return to power at the next general election.

The party suffered a humiliating blow when Respect's George Galloway overturned a 5,000 Labour majority to storm home with a lead of more than 10,000 votes.

But in an interview with The Observer, Mr Miliband said that it was David Cameron and the Tories who were on the back foot after a week in which they were pilloried for the Budget and for sparking panic buying of petrol.

"I think it is going to be remembered for the end of the Cameron project," he said.

"Thursday night was a very bad result but there is a big picture about where politics is and I think people will look back on the last few weeks and say that was when the Cameron project hit the buffers and this was when Labour had their chance."

He added: "Opposition is a long and difficult haul. It is going to be a one-term haul, I am confident about that."

Following reports that the Tories tried to provoke a confrontation with the tanker drivers to create a "Thatcher moment" - echoing Margaret Thatcher's clash with the miners - Mr Miliband said the Government needed to come clean about its handling of the dispute.

"Over the last few days its every move has been designed to whip up unnecessary tension at the expense of the public," he said.

"Ministers knew all along that a strike could not possibly be less than seven days away even were it to be called - that is the law. Yet they panicked the nation all the way to the petrol pumps because they imagined it would boost them in the polls."

Labour to win the next election? Oh please don't make me laugh....

Instead of coming up with sound-bites, wouldn't it be nice if Milliband could manage to come up with a policy. It's easy to criticise people, when things go slightly wrong, for trying to clean up the mess, especially when it was the critic and his mates who made the mess in the first place.
We seem to forget that, compared to the 13 years that Labour spent ruining this country, Cameron has only had a very short time trying to clean it up. And whilst Blair and Brown gave everything away and put us massively in debt, Cameron has to make the difficult choices and take things away where he can to get us out of it.

The three main political parties in the UK have taken the electorate for granted and the electorate have had enough.

I think you will find in Bradford, a safe Labour seat for almost 40 years, Labour lost tens of thousands of voters, the Tories lost thousands Lib Dems lost their deposit.

Ed Miliband, -clown, and Ed Balls, -clown have no plan on the UK economy. Ed Balls, -clown is treating people like fools. Thanks to Ed Miliband,-clown, Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls, the hardworking people are still getting poorer. ‘’Thanks to Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls,- clown, UK economy, is increasingly unfair not just for those at the bottom but for many of those in the middle as well." Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls, the mess they have got us into.

Cameron seems to be using Bush tactics as he is not smart enough to be a Thatcher. Voting for George Galloway? I sometimes wonder where people's heads are at.

Let's try to bring a bit of perspective to proceedings. Close your eyes and imagine Mr. Balls has been running the economy over the last 18 months, in line with Labour's economic "vision". This in itself is enough to drive any reasoned human being into a cold sweat and fear for their children's children. Just ask the good people of Bradford.

so the millipede thinks he will win the next election---in his dreams

not enough water has gone under the bridge to wash away the stains of the bliar bruin (oh and yes the balls) years

we rushed to rid ourselves of the Major government and got the above

I would not trust any of the above though they ALL deserve to go

the millipede is too lightweight a politician to be taken seriously and has not got the respect of anywhere near enough voters to do any good when the time comes, and on the world stage he would get trampled on.

There is time however for a NEW party to emerge just as the gang of 4 did with Williams, jenkins Owen and Rogers did to for a party, the SDP. And I think enough people are so sick of the current lot, in both parties, to want and get them all out.

Roll on the day

Very well put, sound and reasonable! Hopefully some people will take up the cause and not just another Tory or Labour stooge in the wings putting on a different Coat.

Actually Galloway's Respect party a few years ago did for a short while did look like that 'new' party, but warring factions within the left & ongoing sectarianism mentality within some socialists meant the wheels came off & the momentum was derailed. Saying that, I was pleasently surprised with him winning in Bradford. Ed isn't grasping at Cameron's failings as much as he ought to, or as you'd expect.

one thing wrong with Respect Party approach then

it was all based on one man and he was not exactly something the country could take seriously

When the next 'crisis', 'foopah', 'scandal', 'drought' or whatever creeps onto the front page then the current ones will be forgotten. Bottom line remains that Politics these days has nothing to do with what is really important and everything to do with soundbites. Cameron introduces 'pasty tax', Labour MP's develop a sudden liking for hot sausage rolls. It's all just b******t.
Whilst the Leveson enquiry continues to expose the corruption that is rampant across our 'ruling class', none of these people can claim any credibility.
Snouts in troughs is the main driving force.

Cameron began with his first big lie,,referendum, then as always just continued on, hence the current situation..Even so, Labour have nothing new to say, apart from the usual expected rhetoric of rubbish..The predicatble 3 are finished people, start seeking quality leadership just waiting in the wings, waiting for Britain to extricate from it's self from self induced apathy....

Don't get too excited. AIUI surveys indicate that contributors here are even less likely to vote than your average. They sort of sound off here instead of voting - if they are eligible to vote at all.
