'The Newsroom' Trailer: Aaron Sorkin's HBO Drama Teased

Jeff Daniels

The first official trailer for Aaron Sorkin's HBO series The Newsroom, about a cable news show, has been unveiled.

The first look at the drama from the creator of The West Wing and screenwriter of The Social Network and Moneyball shows news anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) lose his objectivity when responding to a question from the crowd at a college panel.

The show will follow fictional cable news anchor Will - the Keith Olbermann of news anchors - who hosts the fictional news show News Night, at the fictional cable network, UBS.

The hourlong drama, which also stars Brits Dev Patel and Emily Mortimer, will chart Will's story as he becomes unraveled and does what ever he can to hold on to his audience.

HBO picked up Sorkin's pilot for a 10-episode series in September.

Wow...I always thought Jeff Daniels was a wishy-washy, kind of nerdy actor.  Nice but not memorable.  Looks like he's matured in a very good way.  Hope this one takes off for Sorkin like The West Wing did.

Olbermann was a consultant, so can you tell who Jeff Daniel's character is based on?

It'll be too smart for the average viewer. That's what happened to studio.

Perhaps, but HBO?   Might just work on that venue.

That's why it's perfect for HBO... their viewers are capable of enjoying something this smart and will enjoy the frak out of it.

What would our future 7th generation think of us?

Still waiting for that third movie -- after "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals" -- in the trilogy of Civil War movies that were proposed and produced by Ted Turner. Jeff starred as General Chamberlain, since he could have passed for the real Chamberlain's twin.

(Just attended the Battle of Shiloh reenactment this past weekend and still fired up. Awesome exhibition :o) )

I need to watch those. I never knew they were intended as a trilogy.

How many people participated in the reenactment? I'm a history buff living in Canada, so any historical reenactments I've seen have had dozens (at best) of participants. I'm pretty jealous of (what I imagine) you must have seen. :)

There were over 6,300 reenactors from all across the country there. They had 117 artillery pieces (more were offered, but authorities stopped entries at 117, which is probably what the actual battle had). The Confederate side had 62 pieces, which were all lined up and had several rolling firings, in a sequence, as was seen in "Gettysburg" prior to Picket's charge. We chose to sit at the mouth of a side road, where it turned out that all participating soldiers traversed to enter the field, so we had a great view. There were around 30,000 spectators.

I have two gggrandfathers from Mississippi who fought for the Confederacy, qualifying me to join the Sons of the Confederacy, which I am contemplating now. The reenactors seem to have had a great time, so I am also contemplating joining a regiment.

Haha, I've said pretty much the same citing US's rankings in education, life expentency and such to explain why America isn't the greatest country anymore, I got blank and shocked looks like he did too! Props to that.
