Prince William Effigy Burned Outside British Embassy In Buenos Aires on Falklands Anniversary (PICTURES)

Prince William has joined an exclusive club – the young royal has been burned in effigy.

The flaming took place during Monday’s riot outside the British Embassy in Buenos Aires on the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, following critical comments by the Argentine President, Christina Kirchner.

The protesters were eventually dispersed by police armed with water canon and tear gas, but not before a likeness of the heir to the British crown had been set ablaze in front of cheering crowds.

The heir's likeness was set on fire with a Union Flag

Earlier, commemorations had taken place in Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost city, concluding with an address by Kirchner.

“It’s an injustice that, in the 21st century, colonial enclaves exist like the one we have here just a few kilometres away,” said the president.

‘We demand justice so Britain doesn’t continue to pillage our environment and natural resources.”

William, who was recently posted to the Falklands as part of his role as a Royal Navy search and rescue pilot, is the latest public figure whose likeness has been made in bag and stuffed pillow form... but he’s certainly not the first.

Here's a look at some of the more memorable effigies of recent years.

We should just park the Sub which has just left for the South Atlantic, 65 miles off Argentina and end this farce now.

Guess The Falklands never existed before they were 'discovered' by the Europeans.

The Falklands belong to The United Kingdom and Nothern Ireland, not England.

Talk about holding a grudge. It's not as if there are any people in the Falklands are being opressed and forced to be British subjects. I'm certain that if they wanted to become Argetines, Britain would gladly hand it over. Canada asked nicely for it's independance and got it. I know that if I were in the Falklands, I would rather remain British and would expect my government to protect my sovereignty.

the majority of the people in Argentina are not interested in re taking the islands, they are to concerned about the economic problems facing their country. the president knows this and is trying to whip up demonstrations to distract attention away from her failure.
many are also wise enough to know that even if they were to take the islands by force that many hundreds if not thousands of their young men would be killed or seriously injured. that they would have to pay Billions every year to defend the islands, that the actions could also start a trade war between their country and europe.

the answer is a long term move to clear UN protected independence for the Islands.

Nothing like a bit of effigy burning to show how advanced and tolerant your country has become. An absolute reason for not allowing the Falkland Islands to fall into the hands of these people.

These people burn an effigy and a flag because they know if they tried to do anything against Prince William or the Falklands it would end in total disaster for Argentina. It is like Israel and Iran, we know sooner or later the Israelis will take out Iran's nuclear capabiliity and if the Argentinians tried anything again the UK would take such action as the aggressor would not be able to take any action for decades.

Hey! I've just had two items removed from this topic - my first and second.

Both referred to the activities of the non-colonialist Argentine government in the years 1976 to 1983 when up to 30,000 people were disappeared (ie. abducted, beaten, tortured and murdered including children and babies).

Check it for yourselves - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothers_of_the_Plaza_de_Mayo and "Desaparecidos",

This only goes to prove how backward Argentina is as a nation. Whilst I know from experience of working in the country that they have some of the nicest people on the planet - the country was and still is dominated by a maniacal few who hark back to the time of the military junta.

The Argies blew it 30 years ago by stupidly invading and wasting the lives of 649 of their soldiers, 255 of ours and three civilians- they would have been better trying to talk a deal in the first place.

If you take Argentinas view that the Falklands belongs to them then you must take the view that Cuba belongs to America because Cuba is near to USA than the Falklands to Argentina

America believes that part of Cuba (Guantanamo) DOES belong to them.

I never get this one, do you know history of it?

My first instinct on this article was the best way to deal with this Argentinian stuff is to ignore them. It's all about publicity at the end of the day. The press do no good by constantly providing media space for this childish wind-up behaviour.

Alternatively, we could have a bit fun first, by staging a demo outside the Argentinian embassy in London and burn an effigy of Christina Kirchner with a torpedo stuck down her pants with "Awaiting Delivery" written on it as a reminder of the past.

The Argentinians have been fed a lot of myths about their claim to the Falklands. None are backed by international legality. There is not an iota of proof of their case for ownership.

International law also refuses to give the Falkland Islanders seperate people status as punishment for Britain's earlier actions, instead Falkland Islanders do not exist as a seperate entity in International law instead they are just classed as British the same as squadies on the Falklands or mainland Brits. This is because the British forcably removed all the earlier Spanish speaking settlers when they invaded and settled British colonists in their place.
12:17 PM on 04/06/2012
What historical proof have you for that statement other than hearsay? Have you any names of persons who forcibly removed Spanish settlers? Exactly what date did this "invasion" take place. Have you the names of the Spanish settlers? Until these facts are known, it can only be assumed this is merely Argentinian propagands.
