Airports Predict Easter 'Gridlock' Due To Staff Shortages

Airlines have warned the Home Secretary that Britain "risks gridlock" at airports over the Easter break due to staff shortages.

British Airways and Virgin Airlines are among 11 firms that have written to Theresa May in anticipation of "unacceptable" delays to hundreds of thousands of passengers travelling over the long weekend.

The UK Border Agency is under fire for a lack of staff able to carry out full security checks, which the airlines say must result in a recruitment drive or the relaxing of some of the more stringent measures currently in place.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Airlines said: "While the decision on what level of check should be made at the border is, of course, a matter for Government, we are concerned that there is currently a mismatch between policy and resource.

"After years of reducing frontline staff, returning to a 100% check system will undoubtedly mean lengthy queues at UK airports over critical holiday periods such as Easter and the Diamond Jubilee.

"If the Government wishes to continue with this policy, it must put the resource in place to make it possible or we risk gridlock at our busiest airports at a time when we hope to be welcoming millions to the UK."

More than 370,000 passengers will leave Heathrow airport between Good Friday and Easter Monday, and 200,000 will pass through Gatwick.

A spokesman for Heathrow owner BAA told the Daily Telegraph: "Immigration waiting times during peak periods at Heathrow are currently unacceptable and we have called on the UK Border Force to address the problem as a matter of urgency.

"There isn't a trade-off between strong border security and a good passenger experience. UK Border Force should be delivering both."

Meanwhile, Britons attempting to travel by rail and road face delays because of engineering works taking place on motorways and train lines.

Stretches of the M1 and M25 will be affected, and the seven million passengers travelling by train over the weekend will see disruption to travel to and from Euston, King's Cross, Liverpool Street, and Waterloo stations in London.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) and Network Rail said there were 34% fewer replacement buses for cancelled trains this Easter compared with the same period last year.

A Border Force spokeswoman said: "We will not compromise border security, but we always aim to keep disruption to a minimum by using our staff flexibly to meet demand.

"Carrying out full checks at airports help us stop threats from terrorists, criminals and others who want to harm the UK and make sure that only those with the right to enter the UK can do so."

Why not use the Army? If they can use them for petrol tankers then why not to help out on border security?

Get some OAP's to man the borders to boost their insulting pensions.

According to those who work at UK Border Force, staff numbers have been cut steadily by 30% over the last five years, how does this fit with claims of better border security?

It should be no surprise to anyone out there that this announcement comes hot on the heels of a further increase in Air Passenger Duty. In many instances these increases are huge - over 50%!

Those of you, like me, who occasionally fly economy to the USA will have noticed that in many cases the taxes you pay are way more than the airline's charge for flying.

So, like driving, where taxes by far outstrip expenditure on infrastructure, flying is now a milch cow for the greedy treasury. Bigger taxes and bigger queues show how inept this and previous governments are. If we are to believe that the government actually wants to tighten up border security (and not just ratchet up the terrorist scare factor) then employ the people necessary.

Apart from the USA which has it's own agenda of fear to support, Istambul (chaotic) and Liverpool (unsafe and claustrophobic) I have usually found that most countries security checks are quite efficient.

Very simply they need to employ more staff. The govt have slowly been reducing numbers of Immigration staff over the years, now there are not enough to do the job.

I have stood for hours in queuesat other international airports, and nothing has been said. You just have to put up with it. I include George Bush airport at Houston Texas, where we not only had to wait, but were treated shall we say less than courteously by suspicious staff. having said that, I would rather go through that than risk a suicide bomber. Murtala Mohammed airport in Lagos is no better, and the airport in Baku Azerbaijan is indescribable, both going in and coming out. The Saudis couldnt care less how long you wait, and there are no gereen and red zones at customs, so you wait in long queues twice. So yes it may be true that not enough resources are put into border control, and yes it mat be true that this means delays, but they are not unacceptable. It is the price we have to pay for terrorism, and illegal immigrants looking for a free ride. Compared to the others, I have no problem. I would rather be secure and suffer a little inconvenience.

why do the agencies always do work at holiday time .they have repaired a reservoir near me in winter so making it empty after the winter rain ..how stupid .they repair the roads in easter ..why ... they always do motorway and busy roads at peak time ...and the worst one is that they dig roads up just after it has been resurfaced

We should return to having UK citizens only lanes at Immigration to separate Bruitish passengers from all those supposedly from Europe. We should also emply more border guarsd to more vigorously check all incoming passengers and should return to stamping all passports to make visual checks possible when the computers inevitably break down

mrs may will tell the border agency staff to just wave them all through, again.

Did anyone hear the Head of the Border Agency on Radio 4? What a pathetic littlte creep - woul;d not answer any relavant question!
If ANYONE has to wait more than 20 minutes at passport control this weekend this guy should be sacked and his barmy boss Mad Maggy May should be forced to resign!
10:17 PM on 04/04/2012
i heard him on 5 live drive time, and he hasn't got a clue as to what happens at the airports, me thinks he will be getting told off by mrs may this time next week.

The UK just slapped on extra surcharges costing about 65 quid per pax entering or leaving the country via one of its international airports.

And it cannot stump up enough money to increase border security agents?

Something is wrong.

Every holiday time its the same with Airports wingeing about chaos. Surely over the years they have`nt done something about it is the main cause. Does`nt happen elsewhere as much.

They tried but Mad Maggie May cut the Border force - no doubt to fund the tax cut for the rich folk earning over £150000!

Or not enouigh recruits getting through the CRB checks or being conversant in English.
10:46 AM on 04/05/2012
If you read the article you will see that the frontline personnel have been steadily reduced for YEARS , so I am afraid you cant blame the silly Mrs may for this. No doubt the unproductive office staff /mamagers have increased though.

Theresa May must take full responsibility for this. She has insisted on the current measures, criticised the agency for their former flexible practices and did not provide additional border staff.
01:25 PM on 04/04/2012
Recession, high unemployment. But so many folk can afford to go on holiday. And airports cannot find people to manage the crowds. Strange. I thought we had no money and were desperate for work.
04:26 PM on 04/04/2012
It is not that the airports cannot find people to do the work it is that after years of cutting the staff to the bone the UK Border Agency do not have the sufficient staff required to do the work and aren't recruiting any to make up the numbers

Just over one week ago I waited in the immigration queue at Heathrow for 3 hours. Virtually everyone who arrived at Heathrow, who had an onward connection at either that airport or Gatwick, missed their next flight. It is hard to even conceive of how long the wait might be on a holiday weekend, not to mention during the Olympic games. Compare this queeu to Shanghai -- 10 minutes, Singapore -- less than 10 minutes, Paris -- 20 min. NY -- 45 min.

NY - 45 mins is a surprise ...
