Barack Obama Meets Star Trek's Lieutenant Uhura In The White House (PHOTO)

Live long and prosper Mr President. Barack Obama got a boost to his re-election campaign last month when Star Trek's Lieutenant Uhura, aka Nichelle Nichols, beamed into the Oval Office.

Nichols played the character in the original 1960s Star Trek television programme and subsequent films alongside William Shatner's Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Spock.

Obama and Nichols' Uhura can both claim to have made important first steps for African Americans in the US.

While the president is the first black man to hold the office, Nichols famously shared the first scripted inter-racial kiss, with Shatner, on American TV in the 1968 episode 'Plato's Stepchildren'.

This picture was taken on 29 February when Nichols was in Washington DC to attend a NASA event, and she had been waiting for it in the post since.

President Obama also confirmed for me that he was defintely a Trekker! How wonderful is that?!

During her visit she tweeted that Obama was "as charming and handsome as I had expected" and that the president confirmed he was a fan of the sci-fi show.

Months ago Pres Obama was quoted as saying that he'd had a crush on me when he was younger. I asked about that & he proudly confirmed it!

Obama also revealed that he had a crush on Nichols when he was younger.

It is of course, not the first time Uhura has been seen with a US president, having met Abraham Lincoln in the 1969 episode 'The Savage Curtain':

Nichelle Nichols was the first black actress to have a major role on television. Gene Roddenberry was an optimist who believed that one day society on Earth will overcome all it's problems and reach out into space. As well as having Lieutenant Uhuru on the bridge of the Enterprise at a time when black Americans were fighting for equality, Gene Roddenberry introduced a Russian character, Pavel Chekov to the crew during the height of the Cold War. Recently Americans and Russians have been working together in space.
Star Trek is not a 'shoot em up' type of show, it dealt with numerour social and ethical issues that we deal with on Earth today and what we may have to deal with in the future. For example how should we handle our relationships with alien civilisations if we ever encounter them. Another interesting issue could be the rights of artificial life forms such as the android, Data which were dealt with in the Next Generation series of Star Trek.

Nichelle Nicols has got to be one of the sexiest women in America. I have been in awe of her since childhood. I always wished she had larger roles in the Star Trek movies ... her ability to play a futuristic woman, completely unhindered by our modern-day gender inequality, was done with perfection.

A friend of mine here at ge (since passed), had his picture taken with this beautiful lady. He was a died in the wool trekkie. He had a great conversation with her. He said she was very special. Live long and prosper as Spock would say.

How sad it must be to not be able to delight in a simple photo of Nichelle Nichols standing with our first black president and giving the Vulcan greeting. That photo made me smile and made my day. But all you experienced was anger and bitter resentment.
