HMS Dauntless Sets Sail For Falkland Islands (PHOTOS)

Posted: 4/04/2012 16:30 Updated: 4/04/2012 16:31

HMS Dauntless, the Royal Navy's most advanced destroyer, has set sail from Portsmouth to patrol the waters around the Falkland Islands.

The ship's deployment has angered Argentina which accused Britain of militarising the South Atlantic as it ramped up the pressure over the sovereignty of the Falklands.

The Royal Navy has insisted that the ship is on a routine mission and is simply replacing the frigate that is currently on patrol.

HMS Dauntless, a type 45 destroyer, the £1billion ship is the RN's latest piece of kit, designed to provide an air defence shield for an entire task force.

The 152 metre-long vessel (it's the length of 16 double decker buses) is considered one of the most advanced air defence warships in the global theatre, boasting the Sea Viper missile system, described by the Ministry of Defence as “the punch of the type 45”.

Sea Viper's strike capability has a range of up to 70 miles, while the highly maneuverable missiles, which travel at speeds in excess of Mach four, can knock drones, aircraft or even other missiles from the air, guided to their target by the Samson radar - the large top on the ship’s distinctive tall mast.

Defences also include a 4.5-inch gun on the forecastle (the forward part of the upper deck), which can fire 24, 80lbs high explosives with a range of around 12 miles for bombarding shore or sea targets, as well as two 30mm calibre guns amidships and a radar-controlled Gatling gun.

The destroyer's shape is designed to reduce its radar signature, making it appear no bigger than a trawler on an enemy's screen, while the complement of 190 British sailors travel in relative comfort, with six to a cabin and iPad chargers.

April 2 marked the 30th anniversary of the war between Britain and Argentina over the islands, which eventually saw Argentinian troops expelled from the territory.

On Monday Argentinian president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner used the commemorations to make a renewed push to wrest back control of the islands, describing Britain's stance as "ridiculous and absurd".

"It is unjust that, in the 21st century, there are still colonial enclaves such as the one we have here a few kilometres away. There are only 16 such colonial enclaves in the world, 10 of which are British," she said.

And London condemned violence that saw protesters attack the British Embassy in Buenos Aires. Several hundred demonstrators pelted police officers with homemade fire-bombs and threw rocks and flaming bottles towards the embassy as a series of events were held in both Argentina and the UK to commemorate the 1982 conflict.

This confirms that the Argentine claim in the UN about the militarisation of the South Atlantic is true.
It´s really amazing how the English commentators love the idea of war. Must be echoes of a distant violent past, or the result of very outdated, simplistic view of the subject.
Which is really funny, with all the accusations to the Argentine government to be using the war politically (during the war, and now), many comments reflect exactly this, but in England!
Sad, really, to be stuck in the past like that. Didn´t english diplomacy use to have the best reputation?

Er, this confirms that one ship is being swapped for another, as per the last 30 years. Albeit aa improved design, that's the evolution of such things.

It's probably worth reminding you that the last country in S. America to start a war was Argentina, in the not too distant past. Mucho enthusiasm in Argentina at the time.

I could go to town on the current Argentine government, and believe me, several American Economics publications have been doing just that this past week. Avoiding all the usual mudslinging though, here's some hard facts for you:

Argentina: 158th (of 179 countries) in terms of Economic Freedom, 100th in the Global Corruption Index, 7/7 (Worst) on OECD Country Risk Rating, Credit Rating B ('highly speculative'), Inflation? Anyones guess 10-25% quoted

UK: 14th for Economic Freedom, 16th in the Global Corruptions Index, 0/7 (Best) Country Risk Classification, AAA (Best) credit rating, 5% inflation

Which country do you think is considered more trustworthy in it's general, everyday dealings with the world? Which one might have more reason to distract it's population at present? How are Argentina's most vocal supporters in this dispute (Venezuala, Cuba, Bolivia) faring?

It looks like Argentina has learnt (changed), and England hasn´t.
This is not a sport nor a ranking dispute, it´s a souvereignity claim.
I don´t know which country has more reasons to distract people. If it is based on rankings, I understand that the "United Kingdom" if falling from the top countries of the world (having been replaced not long ago by Brazil), besides being now politically isolated from Europe and soon to be called plain England again with the future independence of Scotland. Shrinking both politically and economically might be a reason for distraction needs, at least according to the comments you can read here.

Balderdash. Everything you have written is utter balderdash and childish propaganda.

Thank you for being so kind and comment on it, it´s been very helpful at enriching me with plenty of derogatory terms, where english commentators have shown to be sadly and almost exclusively fruitful.

Stealth features make Type 45s show up on radar as fishing trawler size apparently. Given Argentinian patrol boats have been hassling trawlers recently (particularly Spanish vessels), now might be a good time for them to check that 'reverse engines full' gear is working OK.

Britain cannot be seen to show weakness in any territorial dispute and therefore the deployment of the HMS Dauntless is an evil necessity. In recent postings I have suggested negotiation with Argentina regarding the oil and mineral rights which extend up to 200 miles from the Falkland Islands and also our claims to the Antarctic. The Falkland Islanders have the right to feel secure but at the same time we still want peace with Argentina. Maybe we can come to an agreement about acceptable levels and types of arms and armour in the region. The nearest British territory to the Falklands is Ascension Island from where the bombing raid against Port Stanley's runway was carried out using a Vulcan Bomber and bombs left over from World War II. The fact that we were able to hit Port Stanley from such a distance concerned the Argentinians enough to force them to recall a lot of their aircraft to the mainland for fear that Buenos Aires could be bombed next. This helped tip the war in our favour as the occupying forces were robbed of a lot of air cover.
Argentina has not updated it's armoury in 30 years but we have. However I do not think that having the Falkland Islands bristling with too many weapons would contribute to a future re-warming of Anglo-Argentine relations.

Why not offer Agentina a 99 year lease on South Georgia Island on the condition that Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and future presidents live there for 11 months out of the year.

Ungrateful bu**ers! & we didn't take the Falklands war to mainland Argentina! We should have levelled Buenos Aires when we had the chance! Turning the country into an even bigger wasteland than it is now!!

We have the Guns , We have the Ships , we have the Sailors too .

Thats a pretty lethal ship, the Argies have nothing that can give that ship any problems, Britain can still pack a punch despite all the knockers and defeatists in here. Another point - thank God we had a PM with balls in 1982, what Argentina did was wrong and she had no hesitation in sending in our forces to liberate the islands, I wonder what this current bunch of wimps would do under the same circumstances ?.
12:17 AM on 04/05/2012
Thatcher took her eye off the ball letting the Minister of Defence withdraw the submarine patrol which opened the door for argie-bargie. She was cleaning up a mess she helped make.

Johnny - The FALKLAND ISLANDS have never been argentinian, however, a deal was put forward with any oil found to be landed in argentina for which they would obviously make money from but they turned it down, demanding the entire operation, including the islands be handed over to them!
08:22 AM on 04/05/2012
i know that they're called The Falkland Islands i've been there ! i just wanted to know other than 1982 how long we have been in dispute with Argentina over them and is just because of the financial gain as i remember it being cold and wet and very little sun !
