A Colombian girl, believed to be 10-years-old, has given birth to a healthy baby girl, making her one of the youngest mother’s in the world.
The girl, from an indigenous tribe in South America called the Wayuu, delivered the baby by Caesarean section after arriving at a hospital bleeding and in "enormous pain" from the contractions.
According to a video report by Univision's Primer Impacto the girl, who does not want to breast-feed her baby, had not visited a doctor throughout her pregnancy.
Legally, the father, who is unknown, could be arrested for rape but the tribe are given certain amounts of leniency to allow them to maintain their own culture.
But Efrain Pacheco Casadiego, director of the hospital where the girl gave birth, said there had been similar cases of Wayuu young girls arriving at the hospital heavily pregnant.
"At a time when they should be playing with dolls they go to having to take care of a baby," he told local Columbian radio station RCN La Radio noticias.
