Teacher Online Bullying
Students are posting rape accusations and death threats online (file picture)

Teachers are facing death threats, abuse and allegations of serious crimes by pupils and parents through social networking sites, a poll suggests.

One was even told her throat would be slit, while another was accused of being a rapist.

Online abuse of teachers is widespread, with more than two-fifths (42%) of those questioned saying they had been a victim of it, a survey by the NASUWT teaching union has found.

Of those, more than three-fifths (61.2%) said a pupil had written an insulting comment about them on a social networking or internet site, while more than a third (38.1%) said a student had made comments about their competence or performance as a teacher.

And nearly one in 10 (9.1%) said they had faced allegations that they behaved inappropriately with pupils.

One teacher told the survey that a student had posted that they were going to "slit my throat", while a second said a pupil had written "my English teacher should actually die" and a third said a student had posted that a teacher "is a rapist".

Another teacher had faced claims that they were unable to do their job and should be sacked. The teacher told the survey there had been "lies about me: saying inappropriate things to pupils, insulting pupils, having sexually absurd behaviours. Generally defaming and insulting me, spreading rumours about me throughout the school."

In some of these cases, action was taken against those responsible.

The poll, which questioned 1,522 teachers, found that the majority of pupils responsible (60%) were aged between 11 and 16, although some teachers reported comments by primary schoolchildren.

And it is not just pupils who are responsible for posting abuse about school staff online.

Around 16% of those surveyed said that they had had a comment posted about them by a parent in the last two years.

Of these, more than half (52.7%) said they had faced insulting comments, 47.7% said there had been comments about their performance, and 13.3% said there had been allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards students.

The poll reveals that nearly two-thirds (64.1%) of those questioned said they had reported an incident of online abuse, with teachers most likely to tell their school's headteacher or principal.

Among teachers who did not report an incident, more than half (53.2%) said they did not think anything could be done.

And of those who did tell someone about online abuse, just a third (32.2%) said they thought the pupil had been disciplined appropriately and they felt supported.

NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates said: "Some of the findings in this survey are truly shocking.

"Yet there are no adequate procedures in place, locally or nationally, to protect teachers.

"It is clear that some employers are seriously failing in their duty of care by neither having appropriate policies in place nor taking incidents seriously when reported."

The poll also asked teachers to say which social networking or other internet sites comments had been posted on. Some 751 people responded to the question, with Facebook the most commonly cited (by 77.1%).

Facebook said that it has "clear, strong rules" governing behaviour on the site, with tools on almost every page allowing anyone to report inappropriate behaviour. This is then looked at, and content or pages can be removed.

Society has produced good and bad parents; good and bad children and good and bad teachers. In the same way there are strict rules and procedures to deal with racisim, there should be strict rules and procedures to deal with bad parents, children and teachers as they impact the education system. No one needs to fear if they are reasonable.

Does not the old adage about `no smoke without fire` not spring to mind?

the cane and strap was removed because some teachers went over the top using it ,i was caned for making more than 4 conduct marks in a term . another teacher put two pupils across from each other with hands on desk with a cane width between .he then fetched the cane down giving both pupils blisters on their fingers . i hated these teachers ,they deserved to be jailed . nowadays they use different methods to punish .just as violent only by through mental punishment .. teachers have a good deal with pay and conditions .greedy is what they are ..

No mention in this report about what our highly paid police force is doing about this. Hopefully tracking the offenders down with the same energy thay use to pursue other cyber criminals.

making false allegations and threats against teachers is tantamount to bullying in the workplace.
the unions should make sure anyone found doing this should be charged, removed from the school and if found guilty the family and pupil should be named and shamed.

Agreed!!

I agree. the parents and the kids should be sued for all that they have. There is no place in our society frt this sort of thing, as every one has the right to stand up for their rights.

Ratemyteacher.com; every school in The UK is on there and anyone can add a teacher to the data base; it beggars belief and allows anything to be posted about any teacher.

Time to call a halt. Both parents and children who make false accusations should be prosecuted and should face custodial sentances. Also time to bring disciplin back into schools with corporal punishment if necessary and permenant exclusion. If some of the little brats we have in schools want to spend their time at a computer making these allegations then block the family internet access then perhaps the parents will start to see what nasty little brats they have sporned.

My own up bringing taught me to respect my elders otherwise I would be reprimanded , taking away parents appropriate use of physical discipline will have further consequences to society the longer it is continued . Too much to soon ? spare the rod spoil the child ? it is a part of our culture lost , much to our regret .

......but of course it would breach the little darling's Human Rights!!!!

Having "Rights" is fundamental - but isn't it strange how the thugs know THEIR Rights, but never seem to think that others also have them? I'm afraid Britain is too PC these days for basic discipline to be part of everyday life.
Unfortunately it can only get worse!

People are quick to demand their rights, but are slow to acknowledge their responsibilities.

They pay highly for a decent pension, and deserve one. The remainder, they are getting what they deserve by letting all standards slip. Now the kids are the tails wagging the dogs, because they allowed it to happen by removing discipline. Kids calling teachers by their first names, try that in the forces, see what happens. This is why the forces are not in the self made mess that the teachers are, because they never allowed standards to drop, or discipline to be phased out..They are all in amazing shape, apart from wars of course....

20 odd years ago a family member was a teacher he argued against the cane being removed but the PC lefties in his union pushed for it. he told them you will loose a serious deterrent, now he has retired and ex colleagues who argued for the removal are still complaining that they can not control their classes and now they are demanding the Government act and do something.
when i was at school the cane was rarely used but it was there and although some would always ignore it, the ones who have since been in and out of Prison as they ignore the law. the vast majority held back.

Hey, the river, there are those who think they know, and there are those who know. Sadly, the ones who believe they know are in office, and it is from here where all our problems stem from. Teachers, local authorities, government, they have completely lost the plot of anything normal..Now they are passing the Buck of blame, which heads right back to where they are. losers every one........

Action has to be taken against students making unfounded allegations. Prosecution would soon bring an end to this nonsense.

I knew a teacher who was aware of false accusations being made in his school so he would only see pupils in pairs, never alone. A year after starting there, two girls he had seen accused him of inappropriate behaviour. He had to go through a whole set of procedures without being able to challenge the girls. When they were finally facing a formal hearing one girl broke down and confessed they had made it up for a laugh. He quit that year and moved to a private school.

I think teachers have been the subject of ridicule time immemorial.. Granted, probably more covert in past years,.. If you're going to get into teaching, I think you'd need an iron stomach to swallow the insults that would inevitably come.

In all my school years, I think I maybe came across a mere handful of teachers that were well liked by the majority of students.. But even then, you'd STILL hear students cussing about them.
16:04 on 07/04/2012
But rarely did you hear of pupils attacking their teachers, not like the animals of today.

However, teachers should, like the private sector employees, contribute more towards their pension. The Taxpayer is not the 'Money Tree' for the Public Sector, although they would like to think so!

vary simple solution to this - ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS
if someone is threatening to kill online then - there is a digital paper trail (IP addresses etc) so action should be taken

same with allegations of rape - the person making the allegation should be asked to offer proof or prosecuted for slander

Although closing facebook and twitter seems a great idea; sadly there's too much money wrapped up in it..and money talks louder than common decency. I bet the police would be involved, and the politicians falling over themselves to get a sound bite if the online attacks were racist..mere death threats and libelous accusations are possibly seen as trivial..

Social networking sites should have a higher age limit and those found to be abuseing it should have any equipment removed for receiving it. There should be penalties in law in place for those using it to abuse and defame anyone. Should anyone using be found to be using threatening behaviour they should be treated the same as if they had said it to someones face, and summararily prosecuted by the police as they would in real life.
Whilst these sites do a lot of good ( it could be argued) the majority of what i hear and have experienced with these sites is counter productive and bad. Strict policing policies should be in place before they public are allowed to use such sites. Lets face it with all the snooping going on at the moment you'd think the government could do something about it.

Well said. Not too sure though what the "good" is that these social networks do.

I have one good thing to say but only one. My daughter who was deaf always talked to me on facebook every night. On evening I went on for our chat, she said she was not well and an ambulance was called, I went to her straight away and spent the last hours of her life with her due yes to facebook. The bad part is it is over a year ago now. Her facebook account has been hacked into and is being used to scam people, havine reported her death and the misuse of her account I cannot have it closed. Watch out if you get a request from someone you do not know for moeny.
