Dame Maggie Smith
Dame Maggie Smith is as much of a handful as her character Countess Dowager in Downton Abbey, the producer reveals

Actress Dame Maggie Smith can be "a handful" on the set of hit British TV series Downton Abbey and is "very difficult" to work with, according to a producer on the period drama.

The veteran star has won acclaim for her catty character Dowager Countess of Grantham, but US executive Rebecca Eaton admits Smith is equally fearsome behind the camera.

Speaking during a recent screening of the show for American audiences, Eaton said, "Maggie Smith is a handful, it's true. She's very difficult. She knows her worth, and she's tricky on the set, but she delivers when the time comes."

However, Eaton remains a big fan of the Harry Potter actress, revealing it was her casting that sealed the producer's decision to join the show.

She recalls, "I heard that Maggie Smith had been cast to be in it and I thought, 'We have to do it'. Because she, like Judi
Dench
, like Eileen Atkins - there are a few British actors, if they're in, I want it because I just think they're going to be good."

Nearly 60 years in the business, and this is the first time I've ever heard anyone complain about Dame Smith. Hmmmmm...
15:05 on 09/04/2012
She's the only star they've got to deal with!!
13:41 on 09/04/2012
Some of you people totally miss the common sense innit! when you get on bit you're more bothered about falling over stuff like cables and being knocked over by younger people rushing by, if you even complain once, then you're labelled a handful, lol.

She's definitely an asset to the show. Wouldn't be the same without her. All her appearances have been great...and her delivery of her lines...priceless. Aristocratic! (just as her role is supposed to be).

I've been around for nearly as long as Maggie Smith and previously never heard anyone complaining about her or her attitude to work and people. She is a magnificent professional and as such, no doubt, she knows exactly and precisely what working conditions she needs in order to deliver her lines and present her character to its extraordinary advantage. If Rebecca has to learn to comply in the process, then so be it ! My guess is, that the problem is with Rebecca and not Maggie. But Rebecca is trying to salvage her reputation by damging that of Maggie. We've all seen that sort of thing done countless times before. Shame on you Rebecca !

Maggie Smith really is one great actress, one of the best. Who is Rebecca Eaton? how dare this unknown actress put down one of the greats. If not being for Maggie Smith and this great show, Rebecca Eaton would still be an unknown.

Did you even read the article? Rebecca Eaton is not some unknown actress, she's a producer on the show. Seems Ms. Eaton would know first hand what it's like to work with Dame Maggie.

Ok my mistake, I thought she was an actress. Maggie Smith has worked with how many procducers over the years? and you don't see them putting down this great lady. So what if she is a tad difficult? she is great to watch on screen. Typical American if you ask me.

YES AND NO, EVERY PRODUCER NEVER WANST TO ADMIT WHEN THE TRUE STAR OF ANYTHING THEY ARE DOING DECIDES THE WANT OUT, BECAUSE IN REALITY WHO IS REALLY THE ONE THAT DOES NOT KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING? NOT MAGGIE SMITH!
10:38 on 09/04/2012
anyone that says a word against Saint Maggie becomes an instant enemy of mine! she is simply Maggie the Magnificent...and if she demands the best from tin pot unknown would be producers and directors then so be it !!

She's such a good versatile actress. She adds humour to 'lighten' the mood in Downton Abbey when it's all getting a little tense without it spoiling the storyline. I agree it would not be the same if she left as the whole cast are strong together and all deliver a great programme but start taking away very prominent leading characters and that's when a series starts falling apart.

Maggie Smith first came to my attention in the 60s when she made the film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" I thought she was a wonderful actress and she has gone on to make lots of films and she is a wonderful actress. We do not have many of them left the such a Flora Robson, Margaret Rutterford Dame Edith Evans alas have long gone. The cast of Downton Abbey speak highly of her and says she is fun to work with and a very caring person. I am sure any Producers would find it a priviledge to work with Maggie Smith.

I can imagine that Rebecca Eaton would want Dame Maggie Smith in all of her work. What a privilege.

Maggie "handful to work with" Smith delivers an outstanding performance in every scene. The producer should be honoured working with such talent.
21:38 on 08/04/2012
I think that's exactly what the Producer said. You didn't read the whole article did you?

He wasn't glowing enough and I did read the whole article.

She's the best thing about the show. If she does leave, as rumored, I won't watch any longer. She steals every scene - in a good way.

Dame Maggie Smith is one of the most fantastic actors ever and the fact that this producer calls her 'difficult' is, in my humble opinion, FABULOUS! She has got all the talent and experience she needs to back up anything she has to say on a film set and any producer worth their salt would do well to heed her.
Now that is what I call ‘Girl Power’.
