Tory Donor 'Slept On Private Jet' Outside British Airspace To Avoid Tax

Posted: 9/04/2012 12:33 Updated: 10/04/2012 08:41

A wealthy Tory donor flew his private jet out of British airspace at night in order to avoid paying tax, according to a lobbyist caught up in the cash-for-access row.

The Sunday Times reported that the unnamed contributor was said to frequently sleep on board his plane so as to maintain his status as a non-resident and therefore pay less in tax.

Under tax rules people are classified as residents if they spent 91 days in the UK over the course of a year.

The claim was made by Sarah Southern, the former aide to David Cameron who was secretly filmed advising undercover reporters posing as business people how to gain access to the prime minister.

She said flying their private jets out of the Britain to fly round in circles was worth it for the super-rich.

“I know someone who will sometimes get on his jet and fly out and fly back in after midnight. So he’s not been there for a whole day," she said.

She added: “You can sleep on your jet three times a week. You can do whatever you want. The world literally is your oyster".

A political storm erupted in March after the Sunday Times revealed the co-treasurer of the Conservative Party, Peter Cruddas, was telling potential donors that they could influence government policy in exchange for money. A charge the party denied.

The fallout forced the prime minister to publish a list of significant donors who had visited Downing Street and his private country residence, Chequers.

After it emerged that the Metropolitan police had given a retired police horse to Rebekah Brooks, speculation mounted over whether her close neighbour and friend, David Cameron, had ridden it.

After many confusing denials and non-denials, the Prime Minister had to confess that he may have once ridden that horse, Raisa.

Osborne says he is shocked at how the wealthiest among us legally avoid tax. He says he finds legal tax avoidance 'morally repugnant'. But he is silent on when he will repay the Capital Gains tax he legally avoided by flipping his home before the expenses scandal put paid to this odious practice among our MPs. Put your money where your mouth is, George. Show some moral guidance if you truly do think it is shocking.

While holiday makers have to pay this increased tax on flights private jets are exempt for the next couple of years.........

If this leach holds a British passport then perhaps the tax rules should be changed so that if they spend more than 2 weeks in britain they have to pay tax......

After all 2 weeks is only what most tourists spend in Britain......

I don't know if the example is true or not, however, Ms Southern is trying to get money out of donors. To achieve her goals I'm sure that she would provide many examples and make many promises. What would you like; eternal life, sexual prowess, unlimited wealth, world domination it's all waiting for you, just put some money in the pot.

Gosh, the muppet who wrote this obviously doesnt realise that the operating costs, plus airways bills would eclipse any tax liability. How anyone could write such drivel is breath taking!
07:41 PM on 04/09/2012
septic calling - it depends on how much the tax liability might have been - if it had been say £100K then staying aboard the aircraft makes sense - but he could simply have flown to France, the Irish Republic or even Jersey or the Isle of Man - a lot cheaper than flying around in circles at several thousand pounds an hour

I’ve heard of the Confederate Air Force. But the Conservative Air Force? Give us a (tax) break.

"the unnamed contributor was said to frequently sleep on board his plane so as to maintain his"
nearer my god to thee status? An absolute necessity for bankers doing the lord's work, or working in the lords.

“he’s not been there for a whole day,"
It works for MEPs.

"The world literally is your oyster"
So apparently, Pearl’s not the only singer.

"they could influence government policy in exchange for money."
When is some oracle going to predict, that the next scandal will be in-house Inquires being set up to investigate scandals before the public even becomes aware of them? Thanks to GCHQ.
