Alan Davies Pledges £1,000 To Hillsborough Justice Campaign After Criticism From Liverpool Fans

Comedian Alan Davies has made a £1,000 donation to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign after he was criticised for comments he made about Liverpool's refusal to play on the anniversary of the 1989 disaster.

The club's policy is to not play matches on the 15 April so that they may mourn the 96 supporters who lost their lives during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest 23 years ago.

Davies informed a tweeter of his donation:

Alan Davies
good idea, I will make that donation now. It is a good cause and I do support it, despite what some people are saying.

Speaking on the Arsenal podcast, The Tuesday Club, Davies expressed his exasperation at the club's aversion to staging matches featuring them on that date.

"Liverpool and the 15th - that gets on my tits that s**t. What are you talking about, 'We won't play on the day'. Why can't they?

"Do they play on the date of the Heysel Stadium disaster? How many dates do they not play on? Do Man United play on the date of Munich? Do Rangers play on the date when all their fans died in that disaster whatever year that was - 1971?"

Thirty-nine fans were killed at Heysel in 1985 after a wall collapsed - which was deemed to be the fault of Liverpool supporters at the European Cup final. English clubs were subsequently banned from Europe for five years as punishment.

Despite the ire directed Davies' way, Juventus have previously played on the date of the Heysel disaster, United have played on the anniversary of the Munich air disaster, Rangers have featured on the date of the Ibrox stadium disaster and Bradford City have also had a game on the date of the Valley Parade stadium fire.

Davies did state in the podcast that Hillsborough is "the most awful thing that's happened in my life, in terms of football", but stressed it was he said. "ridiculous that they refuse to play on that day any more".

He later took to Twitter to deny he had shown disrespect to the victims, saying that "the tone I took on the podcast was inappropriate for this subject. I support the campaign for justice for the 96."

Liverpool face Everton in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 14 April, whereas Champions League semi-finalists Chelsea play the following day, despite facing Barcelona two days later.

UPDATE: The Hillsborough Justice Campaign have rejected Davies' donation.

I was about to state my honest opinion on this matter but then I realised it's bound to be removed !

You are better not to say anything against the official and agreed opinions in todays society of rapidly diminishing free speech and thought.I'm afraid these days one has to keep ones thoughts secret unless they are the right type of thought.

Nothing worse than someone having a viewpoint then suddenly changing it and making a shameful attempt to buy his way out of it when they realise there may be a small amount of backlash, obviously has no pride in himself or prepared to stand up for his beliefs - Grow a backbone and be a man!

I agree with Alan Davis. Life goes on and Liverpool do seem to have a selective memory when it comes to tragedy. What will they be doing to remember The Heysel Statium tragedy. Or is it that it is right to remember tragedies but to forget shame. Remember seeing both on TV and remember how disgusted I felt, Mourn your dead but also mourn those fans in The Heysel Stadium tragedy and remember what their families lost.

you got to move on in life its remembering the good times, but not forgetting the bad,or you end up having a chip on your shoulder as the blacks have in regards to slavery

Davies is like many present day comedians-totally unfunny-but he has a right to his opinion and what he said is valid-Liverpool and their supporters are very popular in this area but they have a tendancy to think it is still the 1980s and 1990s when they won everything-in reality nowadays they are just an average premier league side-but they were very good last night.

Agree entirely

He's correct. Those fans who suffered this terrible tragedy went to see a game of football and instead of not playing on April 15th they should insist on playing April 15th as a tribute.

How come Huffpost deletes very moderate posts with no swearing and then post quotes from twitter with that sort of language in it?
