Ladies exhale, Max George is no longer engaged to Michelle Keegan.

But before you get too excited, The Wanted hunk and the Coronation Street star are still very much an item.

The singer is currently Stateside competing with One Direction to be the biggest Brit boyband in the US charts, and he confirmed the sad news during a phone interview on American Idol presenter Ryan Seacrest's radio show.

When asked if he was still getting ready to walk down the aisle, he said: "No, no, not any more," before the line went mysteriously dead.

Max took to his Twitter page to explain the hang-up, writing: "Hey everyone, so just to clear up any rumours, me and Shell are still very much together, just there is no wedding. The call got cut off.... And made it sound much worse."

A rep for Coronation Street adds: "[They are] still together. They're traditionalists and realised there is no point in being engaged until they are in a position to plan a wedding."

The shock confirmation comes just two months after Michelle angrily slammed rumours the pair had called off their big day.

Back in January, following rumours the couple had been arguing throughout a holiday in Barbados, she tweeted: "I've just read another false story... Me and Max are still together, there's been no 'bust-ups'... or 'jealous rows'. I haven't 'called off' the wedding, because we never set a date in the 1st place!"

Reports suggest they decided to end their engagement due to their hectic work schedules - The Wanted have become the first boy band to top America's Billboard's Pop Songs chart with a debut single since Hanson. Their hit Glad You Came is currently the number one most played song in America.
