Icelandic Volcanoes Could Power UK If European Power Grid Succeeds

Britain could one day be powered by volcanoes, if a new plan to tap the power of Iceland's geothermal energy gets off the ground.

Iceland has the potential to generate huge volumes of low-carbon power through its active range of volcanoes.

Now the energy minister Charles Hendry is visiting the country in May to discuss the feasibility of laying thousands of miles of high voltage cable to the country, in order to transfer the energy to the UK.

Speaking to the Guardian newspaper Hendry said: "We are in active discussions with the Icelandic government and they are very keen."

The 1000-1,5000km cables - the longest in the world by some distance - would form one part of a hugely ambitious project to link the UK to Europe and North Africa to ensure a clean supply of reliable energy for the future.

The UK has always generated the vast majority of its own power, but concerns about the supply of North Sea oil and an ageing nuclear infrastructure have led the government to look overseas for new supplies.

The eventual, and at this point mostly theoretical, 'super grid' could combine wind and wave power in northern Europe with solar energy generated in Africa and southern Europe.

The UK currently has two inter-connectors to France and the Netherlands, but the government is planning at least nine others.

A new connector between Ireland and Wales will open in the autumn, and another is currently in progress linking the north-east of England to Norway.

Supporters of the project argue it will help to keep bills down by providing alternative and competing sources of energy.

It'll be interesting to see if this is viable rather than relying on outdated nuclear technology which is unsafe and creates waste which we still don't know how to handle properly or dispose of safely

Unlikely and very expensive energy.

Only an idiot would saddle their industries and economy with green taxes on energy and a fuel escalator tax on a road economy making energy costs and transport in Britain the most expensive in the world so industry and businesses can’t compete internationally.

More delusion

it is a lot cheaper to do this then go to war against some country for their oil.

green energy, nice

for goodness sake just build a load more nuclear power plants and be done with it! how much more money will be wasted on 'altenative energy' pie in the sky before we accept that nuclear power is the only viable alternative to fossil fuel

nice! Iceland gets sold off and privatised on utilities as we have had, to pay off their debts..and who is going to pay for it...WE ARE!!

Don't worry it's all bovine manure.

Until the volcanic ash cloud from Ecktoplasmicagulagul or whatever it's called disruted air travel in Europe, and the bank of hankipanki swindle, most people in the Uk probably
thought Iceland was a frozen food shop. When will our lot ever learn, you have to have a lava when you think about it. The Russians, and the Chinese will be in there first I reckon, pricing it beyond our reach. It's only a matter of time before Gazprom Russias' biggest, buys out British Gas.

I bet they charge us the earth for it and still don't pay back the debts owed. Or is it only going to be a luxury for the very wealthy. I wonder!

Just tap into the houses of parliament plenty of hot air there and its just going to waste.

Great now the UK can be held hostage over energy by Iceland, the same bunch that gave us the Cod War and then stitched the UK up with its Icelandic bank fraud ,then next did everything possible to avoid repaying the UK a penny of its debts . Even dodgy Russian Gasprom looks positively trustworthy compared to the Icelandic crooks. Why doesn't the British government go the whole hog in the gullability stakes and just hand over the money in unmarked bank notes to the Somarli pirates and get them to lay the cables on their way over to deliver it in person to the Icelanders? ...talk about a fool and their money?

Come on if they wouldn't Pay for a Fully Working Geo-Thermal Plant that could produce Hot Water in Cornwall How do you expect this to get off the ground

"with solar energy generated in Africa"

Still trying to tie to an unstable political region which in the past has shown no compunction of threatening to ration and even stop energy flows. What a shame.

Keep the money and infrastructure at home by using European sources first.
