Syria Un Vote
The UN has voted to deploy monitors to Syria to oversee the ceasefire

UPDATE: The Syrian Network for Human Rights has claimed fifteen people were killed in Syria on Friday, among them three defected soldiers and a casualty who was tortured to death.

The United Nations security council has unanimously voted for the first wave of Syria cease-fire observers to be deployed to the war-stricken country.

The news follows claims from activists and Syria's government forces of both sides being guilty of breaching the fragile UN-brokered truce. On Thursday it was reported an "uneasy ceasefire" was in places after a week of intense violence which saw hundreds killed by government troops.

But despite the truce, which was organised by the UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, the city of Homs was shelled by Syrian forces late Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

State news agency Sana reported six members of the security forces and civilians had been killed by alleged terrorist groups on Saturday.

A team of 30 unarmed observers will initially be sent, although UN-Arab envoy Annan is seeking a total of 250 monitors to be deployed.

The decision comes on the third day of wrangling over Syria's future. Russia had previously vetoed two previous security council resolutions on Syria, with the country's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin announcing he was "not completely satisfied" with the talks held on Friday.

But in a turn of events, Russia has called on both sides in Syria to "strictly obey" Amman's peace plan, according to Sky News reports.

Britain's foreign secretary William Hague welcomed the monitoring missiondescribing it as a "vital step" in supporting the Syrian truce.

"It is essential that it begins its work urgently and without impediment," he said in a statment.

"The Syrian government must ensure the team has freedom of movement and access and it must not obstruct communication.

"I again urge the Syrian regime to comply with Kofi Annan's plan in full. It must stop troop movements towards population centres; end the use of heavy weapons in civilian areas; and withdraw the military to their barracks."

This seems a bit strange...there is a ceasefire which no-one is paying any heed to....the country is obviously in the midst of a civil war, yet we are going to send in a Monitor Team to make sure the "ceasefire" is being adhered to....
This seems ludicrous - does nobody in the UN watch the news? How many lives of innocent UN military observers is it going to take, before they finally decide that their peace-brokering has been a complete failure? This is utter madness - let the politicians and beaurocrats from the UN go to Syria to monitor their "success"!!!

Any Country who supported Terror in syria, who supplied arms for 10 year old children's use, satalite phones to guide these children to their targets, who allowed mercinarys to use their soil to raid syria, the so called friends of William Hague and the Nato gang, should not be accepted to take part in Mr Annan's vital Mission to bring peace for all the Syrian people.

Well let's hope the UN has more influence and power to uphold the ceasefire than the League Of Arab Nations monitors had/did during their brief and wholly ineffectual soiree to Syria. Somehow I doubt it. It is in the rebels self interest to provoke Assad's forces into continued breaches of the ceasefire to gather further public support. Assad will not be deposed anytime soon and the ceasefire strengthens his position as it implies tacit approval of his regime by the UN whose intervention demonstrates its understanding that there is violence and mayhem on both sides. I am no supporter of Assad but I believe if enough Syrians turned against him he would have to leave. As I have said before we simply don't know the extent of the support the rebellion has. Assad retains the support of the armed forces. police, secret service et a.l Until that alters and there is a significant and publicly acknowledged increase in the support of the Syrian nation for Assad to leave he is safely ensconched in the seat of power.

United States has used the veto on 82 occasions between 1946 and 2007; and has used its veto power more than any other permanent member since 1972. (Wikipedia).
