Mother And Daughter Die In House Fire In Northern Ireland

A mother and daughter have died in a house fire in Northern Ireland.

The flat at Dunlea Vale, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, was engulfed in flames after 10pm last night.

The victims were Deirdre McGirr, 38, and Elizabeth McGirr, 71, police said.

A man aged in his 30s escaped injury.

Police are investigating the circumstances.

Nationalist SDLP chair of the party's Dungannon branch, Denise Fox, expressed sympathy for the family.

"This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the two women who lost their lives in this blaze," she said.

"There is an overwhelming sense of sadness in Dungannon at this news and the thoughts of the community are with those close to the deceased.

"I also hope the man who escaped injury is given all the support he needs to recover from what must have been a hugely traumatic experience.

"I appeal for people to take precautions to remain fire safe in their homes to lower the risk of an awful tragedy like this happening again."

A police spokesman said: "At this stage, police are appealing to anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area or who has any information to contact Dungannon CID."
