Fracking faces large-scale opposition due to environmental concerns

The controversial method of drilling for gas, known as "fracking", has been given the go-ahead despite causing two earth tremors in the UK last year.

Two minor earthquakes near Blackpool in 2011 prompted an investigation into the cause, which concluded the drilling into rock by a shale gas company was "highly probably" responsible for the tremors.

After the incidents in Lancashire, Mark Miller, the chief executive of the company responsible - Cuadrlla, turned his attention to Sussex, Kent and Surrey in the search for shale gas. But Miller faced a series of protests by the "No Fracking in Sussex" group who demanded reassurance the quest for gas in the area would not have any environmental impact.

But despite local and national opposition to the controversial method of drilling for shale gas, an independent government-commissioned panel ruled on Monday the extraction method should go ahead throughout the UK - albeit under strict conditions.

In order to comply with the new recommendations, energy companies using the fracking method will have to devise a system to detect warning tremors in the rock.

Engineers take a look at the Cuadrilla shale fracking facility on October 7, 2007 in Preston, Lancashire.

Fracking is so controversial as it has been previously linked to the contamination of water supplies, air pollution and a higher risk of earthquakes.

The procedure involves injecting a combination of water, chemicals and sand at very high pressure into shale beds in order to release natural gas reserves.

The report written by professor Peter Styles, independent fracking expert Christopher Green and Brian Baptie, from the British Geological Survey, called for an effective monitoring system during any future operations.

"The similarity of the seismic events [in Blackpool] suggests this is a highly repeatable source," the report also warned.

I've forgotten more about drilling than these so-called "experts" will ever know.

Let's cover the country in windfarms, which are only viable with taxpayer's money, instead?

Al Gore made $100 million investing in government-backed "green" energy firms...

But now he can't get out of them fast enough!

And it's no wonder... We continue to learn about dozens of epic failures from firms like Solyndra, even after these companies gorged themselves on $90 billion of OUR money.

Dont worry it will be monitored under strict conditions ,what a load of T.rans W.orld A.irline T.ours , once that valve is opened they dont have a clue whats going to happen once they start high pressure fracking water courses will get polluted as gas gets pushed through the fractures in the lower strata ,water courses can get altered .

Fracking is like firing a gun on a mountain side if the wind is blowing away from the mountain chances are nothing will happen ,if the wind is blowing towards the mountain your going to end up with a billion tons of snow coming your way ,there is danger either way .

what is not talked about is who owns the land ! councils and government ,national trust have to give permission ,and there is big money to be made ,if you think they are going to take your health and safety concerns into account you have anther thing coming .
If you sign a contract with a utility company for rights on your land the small print may give them rights to extract minerals and the like ,there is always more than meets the eye where money is concerned !

fracking is causing many earthquakes in the american midwest ,govt's don't seem to worry about future generations .as grandma used to say we're all going to hell in a hand basket so we'll meet up there

THis is nuts. Anyone remember last year's earthquake in Blackpool that was caused by fracking. We could feel it in Southport and Merseyside!

Sometimes the good and security of a nation will have to go in front of a slight, several second swaying which could reach 0.8 on the Richter scale and cause Ms. McCreedys figurine to fall over because the super glue let go from the last time someone bumped the table.

"Gas Fracking Can Go Ahead In UK Despite Causing Earthquakes, Say Experts"
Frack you Jack, we’re alright. Even if the chemicals do contaminate the ground water, its not as if we don’t have plenty. Any aquifer (fracked)up, this’ll all be some coming son and daughter’s dilemma soon enough.

"an investigation into the cause"
When there are sections of substrate strata prevented from moving across each other by friction. Then some expert (ex=has been, spert=drip under pressure) pumps some lubricant in. BANGO!

"No Fracking in Sussex"
They’re so posh there, they think sex is what rose bed manure comes in.

"albeit under strict conditions."
That if it contaminates water reserves, it’ll all be removed? Er…how exactly?

"Fracking is so controversial"
building an earthquake proof reactor might be a better plan. Best beware of those frackers in parliament.

The more unpopular an idea, the futher north of London it goes.

I live less than 20 miles from where the drilling site near Blackpool had the problems. There has now posters gone up on notice boards where i live saying they are going to hold meetings about the possibility of " fracking " around here. It was ok when the frackers where a few miles away but now the frackers are getting closer it`s a different matter.
There are frackers here and there are frackers there in fact we could end up with frackers every fracking where !!!

I dont believe that this method is means of producing cheap gas. It's just evidence of the desperation to keep the failing fossil fuel economy going. The demand for energy grows ever greater yet oil and gas is a fast dwindling resource.

I'm half expecting people to scoff at people pointing out the dangers of fracking and call it the unnecessary bureaucracy of a "health and safety" society.
