Lucy Powell, Miliband Aide, Selected As Manchester Parliamentary Candidate

Ed Miliband's Aide Lucy Powell Chosen As Parliamentary Candidate

Ed Miliband''s aide Lucy Powell has been chosen to be Labour's parliamentary candidate for the Manchester Central constituency.

Powell, the party's deputy chief of staff, was picked after winning a ballot of local party members. She also served as Miliband's campaign manager when he mounted his bid for leader of the Labour Party.

Powell, who stood without success in the Manchester Withington constituency in 2010, said: "I'm honoured to have been selected to be the Labour candidate for Manchester Central"

"These are tough times and under this Tory-led government many people in Manchester are suffering and getting left behind. If elected I will use all my energy, skills, experience and knowledge to stand up for our communities and get things done for the better."

"I'm looking forward to getting out and meeting as many residents as possible in the weeks ahead to listen to their concerns" she added.

A by-election will be held in the constituency later this year after the sitting MP, Tony Lloyd, was selected to stand as the party's candidate for the election to become Greater Manchester's first Police and Crime Commissioner. Lloyd holds the seat with a majority of over 10,000 votes.
