Fuel Driver Tank Talks

Fuel tanker drivers have rejected a proposed deal aimed at averting strikes, renewing the threat of walk-outs, Unite said on Wednesday.

The union's assistant general secretary Diana Holland told journalists that they were still "optimistic" and talks aimed at averting industrial action would continue.

She said: "While there has been some progress it is clear that our members need more guarantees and assurances from the employers about their commitment to meaningful minimum standards.

"We remain committed to achieving a negotiated settlement that brings stability and security to a vital industry and gives this workforce, and the public, confidence that the race to the bottom is ending."

"What we can say to people is please, as we have said all along, do not panic. It is very clear at this point in time we are not on strike.. We are still wanting to talk and we are calling for further talks because we feel we are able to reach a solution in this dispute."

She added: "We are going to approach Acas for [further] talks. There will be a range of discussions."

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said the government was "disappointed" no agreement had been made.

“We understand that these are complex issues but urge both parties to work towards a negotiated resolution with the support of Acas.

“The government continues to believe that any strike action would be wrong and unnecessary.”

According to the union drivers "overwhelmingly" rejected a deal offered after six days of talks with the conciliation service Acas.

Peter Harwood Acas Chief Conciliator said they were "disappointed" but would try and facilitate further talks: "Naturally, we are disappointed at today's outcome, following the parties' intensive talks at Acas over the last two weeks. We are contacting the parties and the challenge now is to see if we can find a way forward."

A government spokesperson said on Friday evening they were continuing " "to work on contingency plans" in event of any strike.

Fuel tanker drivers are concerned about health and safety, pensions and terms and conditions.

The announcement came just hours after Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband clashed in the House of Commons over the threat of a tanker strike.

Cameron accused the Labour leader of "complete weakness" for failing to stand up to Unite, while Miliband called on the PM and Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude to apologise for provoking panic-buying at the pumps when the prospect of a strike was first raised.

Here we go again, the unions are likely to hold the country to ransome over better pay and conditions. We'll soon be diving cars powered by rubber bands, or we'll get chains connected to the gearbox so we can pedal our way to work.

If they do go on strike, I suggest that they target the Olympics so we can all get a break from the media circus.

This is all about pensions, the 'working conditions' part has been put in as a smokescreen by Unite to enamour some sympathy from those who will be affected.
A couple of points, the tanker drivers work for private companies, with the minimum annual salary around 40k. If the company they work for hasn't made pension contingency plans for their workers, then the workers themselves should be making their own plans for retirement.
So why is it the public are being targetted via strike action and not the parent companies themselves? Seems to be just another assault on the Government by Unite at the behest of the ineffective Ed Milliband who they played a significant part in placing him as 'Labour' party leader.
Jim Callaghan, John Smith etc would look at this bunch of union yes men and put them in their place!
Oh, and Ed? Stop calling your party Labour.... it annoys me! It's like 4 black teenagers calling themselves 'The Drifters' it fools no-one!

When will the people of this country re-learn that to an employer, a worker is just vermine that they make money out of, rather than a person. Don't complain about your own poor working conditions and pensions etc. if you are not prepared to fight to achieve progress in those areas. Whatever the tanker drivers can achieve for themselves from this is no more than they deserve, don't vilify the unions, I don't know of one non union employee of a large employer that went and negotiated on behalf of his/her colleagues a successful agreement.
Nobody is lucky to have a job, they are essential and insisted on in this fascist run society, and just like health care and housing, they are deliberately rashioned. Less workers are forced to do forever more work, while the saved money is stuffed into the shareholders and fat cats pockets, the capitalists call it being competitive.

I am slightly confused, I am not sure who is telling the truth regarding this headline. I just heard on the news that they will not be going on strike and more talks are on going, Why incite people to go out and stockpile petrol again until you know the facts. Exasperating

The only winners are the government the dearer the fuel the more tax they get , so the scare mongering is in the governments interest. And tankers drivers are at the top of the earnings scale. They earn stupid money and obviously want bonuses on top of that. Average wages of a HGV driver don't even come close to theirs and they work harder for it. They are not even capable of changing a bulb without having to take it to a dealership, thats proerly why they miss their deadlines on deliveries. Greed all round. Lucky you have all got a job to go to. and a high paid one at that. You get double of a fire fighter! How much at risk are they??????????

Strikers don't strike these days with an easy conscience. They know that the only way left to them to get their point home to the capitalist employers and owners is to strike. It is an avenue of last resort, not their first objective. It will cause harm and inconvenience to them as well as the rest of the motoring public. As for the forces taking over the tanker drivers' role I am against that too. The forces should not be used and abused as strike breakers. This move by the head capitalist; Cameron and his lackies is typical of the move to take this country back to a time when the working classes should doff their caps and hold the doors open for them to walk through. No more, the workers and the so called professional middle classes will not stand for it. Cameron and co. need to think again. They have got so much wrong and in particular with the way they display their arrogant contempt for this country's poor and under priveleged by pushing through a budget of harm for everyone. Long may they rot in the mire of their own creation.

Having just done the training as I'm in the RAF I have learnt a lot behind the real reasons for the strike. For one it's not health and safety as while I was training the health and safety was every strict. Also half of the good drivers never recieved a ballot paper which makes me wonder if unites strike ballot is actually the real opinion of the drivers because after talking to a lot of them and top guys they were the general feeling was that they don't really want to go on strike it's just the minority that want something for nothing that do. The job its self is in my opinion compared to what I do is very easy and straight forward and these guys are on nearly double my pay. Wonder if the would swap see how bad they think they have it then.
11:04 PM on 04/18/2012
Well back up your comment then , and tell us what it is they want for nothing
11:49 PM on 04/18/2012
Well from what I can gather more pay and better pensions. Don't see why they should get a better deal when everyone is taking hits. The military especially. Let's not forget that unite fund labour. And labour are not in power at the moment. So what's the best way of getting their funded party in power. By making it as difficult as possible for the other parties in power. The strike threat is politically driven. Why do you think ed miliband has been very quiet on this unless it was to point the finger at the government for the panic buying.

this how the goverment want us all to react. they want us all to hate the unions when the unions have always been about protecting workers rights. if you had the same working conditions as the tanker drivers then you would want a union to defend you, wouldn't you. they are also trying to turn the employed against the unemployed by saying that those on benefit are all scroungers, yet, they are still making people unemployed. they are trying to turn this country against itself, we are such a poor country that struggles finacially so where did they find 9 billion for the olympics????. it is time this country pulled together and got rid of the people that just want to rip us all off with their expenses and high cost lifestyle. it is time we all opened our eyes to the lies that we are fed on a daily basis
11:36 PM on 04/18/2012
No point blaming the coalition for the olympics it was the previous government who won the bid to hold them.
Also i think you would be able to replace all of these tanker drivers in one day if you offered there £40k wages to other drivers! i know i would jump at the chance to earn that amount of money.

The only security you need is the ability to do the job those that hide behind the union have not been taught how to be a top performer 90% of them are non-performers and would be terminated if they had to stand on their performance.

Ah dont worry, as ever the Army will stand in for them, you know the Army that does not have a union, the Army that works the jobs and hours its told to work, the Army which does not get overtime, the Army whos pension has changed 3 times in the last 7 years (reductions/terms and condition changes, sounds familiar eh?) the Army whos allowances have been slashed, the Army which has had/having 30000 job cuts (of which half are compulsary) the Army who still has its own job to do, blah blah blah sorry i cant be botherd to go on (bet your glad!)......However some of the RLC soldiers are just as qualified/more so than the tanker drivers and are on £19000! Dont worry, the Army (sorry and the RAF and Navy boys) will stand in....yet frigging again!!!
