Unemployment has fallen by 35,000 to 2.65m in the three months to February 2012, however the number of people claiming job seeker's allowance has increased by 3,600.

Unemployment has fallen by 35,000 to 2.65m in the three months to February 2012, however the number of people claiming job seeker's allowance has risen by 3,600.

According to official figures from the Office for National Statistics the drop in unemployment represents the first decrease since spring 2011.

The number of people claiming job seeker's allowance (JSA) last month increased by 3,600 to 1.61 million, the smallest monthly rise since last December.

Average earnings increased by 1.1% in the year to February, 0.2% down on the previous month.

Despite the drop, other figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of unemployed women increased by 8,000 in the latest quarter to 1.14 million, the highest figure for almost 25 years. Long-term unemployment has also risen, with the number of people out of work for over a year jumping by 26,000 to 883,000, the worst total since 1996.

The figures also showed an 89,000 rise in the number of people working part-time because they could not find full-time jobs, to a total of 1.4 million, the highest figure since records began in 1992.

But youth unemployment dropped by 9,000 from the three months to November.

Employment minister Chris Grayling said there were "positive steps, but we've still got a long way to go."

"Clearly I want to see more full-time, long term careers," he told the BBC. "Of course, more full time jobs, more people in employment."

There was a 53,000 increase in the number of people in employment to 29 million, although the figure is 57,000 down on a year ago.

The fall in unemployment was the first since the quarter to May last year, with the number of jobless men 43,000 down to 1.5 million.

The number of people classed as economically inactive, including those on long-term sick leave, students, those looking after a relative or who have given up looking for work, fell by 25,000 to 9.27 million, a rate of 23%.

Average earnings increased by 1.1% in the year to February, down by 0.2 percentage points from the previous month to the lowest since the summer of 2010.

Average weekly pay in private firms is £459, compared with £477 in the public sector.

There were 1.4 million working days lost through strikes in the year to February, the highest total since 2002, largely as a result of last November's walkout by public sector workers in the row over pensions.

Don't be fooled by false and creative accounting.

Has anyone considered that these figures might only be due to the way the State benefit system has been restructure.

When an unemployed person is moved onto a training program run by the DWP of which there are thousands, he/she is removed from the unemployment figures list. The person still receives benefits, but under a different banner, he/she is still unemployed.

Well as over half the benefit bill goes on pensioners how do you suggest the "ever caring "government tackles that one? Prey for a particulaly cold winter?

I suggest that the government should stop paying people not to work. Generations of families having been milking the benefits system for years. Some have never worked in their lives and others have been encouraged by successive governments to become baby factories for increased benefits. Others have been encouraged to come herefrom abroad like asylum seekers to live on benefits without having paid into the system. The benefits system is a joke and is used by every Tom, Dick and Harry as an excuse not to work.

Don't worry, nothing goes up or down in a straight line. The overall trend is down. This is a blip.

The figures are actually correct because these figures have been taken from the people forced in to jobs were they will gain experiance BUT WILL NOT BE PAID ANY WAGES? In May the Government will say that unemployment has dropped again due to the debarcle with family tax credit, saving millions by taking it from the poorest workers in the country. Remember family tax credit is not income support, its not unemployment benefit, its a tax susidy for working families on the lowest pay, self employed people working for less than the minimum wage just to work instead of claiming unemployment benefit, so before anyone shouts about claimants....these are some of the poorest workers who he has dealt a blow to this April andthen braggs about saving money and creating jobs which is misleading as the jobs are job experience without pay which as you no, are NOT jobs.

If the government are having a hard time elsewhere and they are desperate for good news, Its easy to manipulate a drop in unemployment for a single quarter. Simply unfairly sanction 30,000 people this means they cant get benefit so are no longer in the unemployment figures. They will then have to take the descision to appeal which takes months. And best of all if they win they get no compensation even though they are completely innocent all they get is their money they were entitled to originaly back dated. So the system rewards the government for trying it on it hasn't lost anything . Better still the government gets the "good news" dip in unemployment and many claiments cant take it any more and dont appeal. This con explains these one of strange occurences where people officialy dissapear from the unemployment figures yet dont go into a job either.

Does anybody still believe these figures? Expect down the line we will be treated to another "whoops in hindsight we have now discovered another error in the counting" admission. Just like we are now regulaly treated to over Inflation, the recovery etc. As this proves time and time again that these statisticians cant get their figures right how about firing them and advertising their jobs in the jobcentre, as somewhere amoungst the ever growing ranks of the unemployed their are people who could do a far better job.

...Yeah' I remember the eigties' When the Tories fiddled the figures by shoving people on the sick'..To keep the Jobless figures down'...Some people seem to have forgotten that fact...Oh' and the YTS' slave scheme to have the same effect....Wait a little longer'..We'll find more little tweaks to confuse the situation..

Is it just me or is anyone else cynical about these figures. The amount of varients is an ideal way to disguise the figures, there appears to be more of this, but less of that and so on. As a small business owner I don't need to read deeply into these figues, along with many others I have known for quite some time now it is a tough old world. Shame politicians are so desperate to disguise it. They do their best to bring a positive for it only to be shot down the next day by a number of negatives. Kiddology does no good, be honest tell it as it is and at least we can address the issues from a point of reality.

and most of these so-called new jobs are part-time'...Just when the Government have slashed Tax Credits' so you have to do a minimum of 24 hours paid work'...Also many people will be in hock to loan-sharks again just like the eighties and people with morgages in negative equity...This is all Bull Crap..!!
