Riots Death Trial Due To Begin

The trial of eight people accused of murdering three men who were struck by a car during riots last summer is expected to begin today.

Haroon Jahan, 21, and brothers Shazad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31, were hit by a car on Dudley Road during disorder in the Winson Green area of Birmingham in the early hours of August 10, as riots swept across the country.

They were pronounced dead in hospital.

Ryan Goodwin, 21; Shaun Flynn, 26; Juan Ruiz-Gaviria, 31; Joshua Donald, 27; Everton Graham, 30; Adam King, 24; Ian Beckford, 30; and a youth who cannot be named for legal reasons, will face a jury at Birmingham Crown Court. All of the defendants deny murder.

The start of the trial, which is set to last 10 weeks, was delayed yesterday by legal argument.

A jury is expected to be sworn this morning, after which the prosecution's case will be outlined to the court.

Haroon's father Tariq Jahan, who made an emotional plea for calm after the deaths, is scheduled to give evidence at the trial tomorrow.
