Andrew Shaylor's Hell's Angels Portraits Reveal Softer Side To Biker Gang

Have you ever got up close and looked into the eyes of a Hell’s Angel biker? No? Never? Us neither. We’d be a little intimidated by all the tattoos, chains and roars of the Harley Davidsons. And trying to thrust a camera in their faces is probably not best advised either.

The members-only outfit have remained closed to outsiders since forming in the 1940’s, but one outsider got in, and got close.

London-based Andrew Shaylor, who has been involved in photography for 20 years, spent four of them with the UK arm of the motorcycle club, getting a rare glimpse into their commonly misunderstood world.

His collection of striking, sincere, black and white portraits and shots of the gang interacting, show a much softer side to what is often thought to be a rather hard-man collective.

“Once the HAMC agreed to 'let me in' they were extremely co-operative in general,” he said.

“Right from the start, it was important to remain professional and to show a dedication and spirit in what I was doing. If I pretended to be anything other than myself, they would have spotted it. By communicating this and being around them, showing them the work as it grew helped to make the project real and honest.”

So there were no scary moments? “Well not really,” he said. “I don't think it's worth worrying or thinking about something that you would have no control over. As I learnt, if I show them respect, I get it back.”

The project took place in the early 2000’s, with a book featuring over 300 images of the bikers published in 2004. Andrew has since been specialising in landscapes, travel and automotive photography, as well as portraits.

“At present I am in the middle of shooting portraits for the commemorative programme for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics,” he said.

I'm gonna give 2 more f'rinstances then I'm gonna leave it, as theres none so blind as those who will not see. I moved into the street and the neighbours were a bit spooked by the look of me n the lads. everyone got snowed in and we shovelled the snow off 2 old ladies drives and paths and put salt down so they wouldnt fall over. one of the old girls said she couldnt afford to pay us, everyone laughed and said we wouldnt take it if she had pots of money, but she could put the kettle on if she wanted. She (and her son, who turned up the next day) were well chuffed at what we'd done. she made us some cakes a while later. A kid in the street kept avin the chain come off his bike, so I tightened it up and his dad came over and I showed him how to do it. attitudes changed after that and lots of people were more than happy when their cars wouldnt start to have a load of "motorheads" in the street.

Well I have the greatest respect for decent bikers, whether "Angels " or not-its the hair brained eejits that help to give bikers a bad name -one of my very best friends is a biker (old skool) and I love him to bits ,piercings, tattoos, grease and leather, the lot-never met a better bunch of guys .Always remember when I was peddling the a*** of my ex husbands boneshaker bike, and sailed past a geek on his racing bike -all the bikers outside their pub stood up and cheered!! Happy daze xx

I see you removed my comment...is it okay if I say, I hope you will be giving some of the
London and inner city White Black and Asian Gangs similar airplay and showing us their poasitive side too..

It's not hells angels who are filling up the jails.. brand new, huge facilities taking up our precious land. The liberals would have a field day with stories like this because it makes it easier for them to side-step the real issue and, naturally, visit these jails and see for themselves the slime being putting in them.

Fact. You're far more likely to be hurt or killed by a Mexican-affiliated gang than you are a Hell-raiser. The statistics speak for themselves, and if you are driving in the South West of the United States, I recommend you talk to the farmers trying to protect their land and their families from the raging horde. And yet, it seems neither the media in general nor our elected (lol) officials, nor the Obama administration, wishes to touch this issue with a barge-poll..

Hells angels are a biker gang associated with bikes. The likes of MS13 are far higher in number, and are associated with drugs, guns, people smuggling, and indiscriminate murder. You decide which is the bigger threat (if you haven't done so already). The people behind these gangs, the people letting them in, are directly responsible in my book.

bikers are just like most people but are more easily recognised for who and what they are into coz of the way we dress. there are always a few bad apples that get everyone tarred with the same brush. a few years ago we were all goin away for a few days and one of our mates couldnt afford it and his bike was off the road. the followin day I get to Robs place and he has got his other bike out of the back of the garage and has spent hours workin on it, we all get the spanners out and the bike is fixed. Rob then puts our mate on his insurance gets it MOTed and taxed, we all chip in for petrol etc and our mate comes with us and a great time was had by all. How many of you know people that would provide you with a vehicle, insurance, tax, MOT, spend hours fixin it, and give you petrol, beer, food, friendship and loyalty to that extent. Not many I'll bet.

I met some Hells Angels a few years back. Tough - yes. Outlandish behaviour - yes. But politeness exemplfied to old ladies and gents. Every time they came into our office, helmets removed (as per sign on door), and polite to staff. Their dealings with the company were always "spot on".
I wouldn't want to cross them, but certainly I could have no complaints about their general behaviour. No doubt most are like that, with only a few who give bikers a bad name.

big up for this comment, this peeps is the majority of people that ride a motorcycle, a nod a wave you will get from most fellow motorcyclists, as a lifelong fan, keen rider, my feeling of immense joy when on my kawasaki is freedom personified, those that are thinking of taking up riding should not think for too long because you will be missing out in one of lifes true pleasures,

Look like a load of old men to me.
19:32 on 06/05/2012
how observant you are. not surprizing as the Hells Angels originated after WW2 when the fighter pilots came home and still wanted the sort of excitement and cameraderie they had gotten used to. you too have to go and stand by the sign.......Bellend
