Shooting Of Five-Year-Old Thusha Kamaleswaran: Three Men To Be Sentenced Over Stockwell Gang Attack

Three Men To Be Sentenced Over Shooting Of Five-Year-Old

Three men are due to be sentenced today over a gang shooting that left a five-year-old girl paralysed.

Nathaniel Grant, Anthony McCalla and Kazeem Kolawole were hunting a rival gang member when they shot Thusha Kamaleswaran at her aunt's south London shop in March last year.

They were found guilty last month of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Thusha and shopper Roshan Selvakumar, who was shot in the face, as well as attempted murder of their intended victim Roshaun Bryan.

After spending a year in hospital, Thusha Kamaleswaran said she couldn't wait to get back to normal and dance again, like she used to.

Coming home again, her parents haven't been able to tell her she is paralysed for life.

Asked what she is looking forward to most, Kamaleswaran said: "School, and doing my other dance, and playing." She also said she would like to train as a doctor.

But her mother Sharmila says that she is still "very worried for the future of our daughter" and described her heartbreak at the tragedy.

A bullet hit the girl in the chest and passed through the seventh vertebra of her spine, leaving her wheelchair-bound for life.

However a group of detectives and police staff were so moved by her tragic situation that they decided to help raise money to support her family.

Thusha's parents have struggled with debt since the tragedy as they try to adapt to her medical needs.

Already donations to the Met team have reached £125,000, far more than was originally expected.

A group of 15 officers and police staff are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge in September - attempting to climb the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales - Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Mount Snowdon - in 24 hours.

Six-year-old Thusha has only recently been discharged from Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, where she had to spent most of her time since the shooting.

In an interview with the Daily Mail after three men were found guilty of gunning her down, she described her dreams of becoming a dancer, and said: "I am scared to get into the car because of the strangers all around us. I worry that someone will try to hurt me again."
