A seven-year-old boy has died while playing football.

Ciaran Geddes was enjoying a kick-about at Locking Stumps Community Primary School, in the Birchwood area of Warrington, Cheshire, when he suddenly collapsed.

Ciaran was taken to Warrington District General Hospital but later died.

It is not yet known what caused his death.

A tribute card at the scene of his death read: "Sleep well little man, God bless."

In a statement, his family said: "Ciaran was our young, rising star, he shined brightly in our lives.

"He was taken from us too soon but will never be far from our thoughts and dreams. His football was everything to him, and his beloved Chester FC.

"He lived with joy in his heart as well as a love for his family.

"His smile was infectious and it is how we will remember him.

"He will sleep soundly now. We miss you Boo and will see you again."

John Littler, headteacher at the school, said: "The whole school community is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Ciaran and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time."

Cheshire Police and paramedics were called to Glover Road in Warrington at 6.15pm on Tuesday following a report of a seven-year-old boy who had collapsed.

A police spokesman said: "He was taken to Warrington District General Hospital where he sadly later died.

"At this stage, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the child's death and his next of kin have been informed.

"A post-mortem to confirm the cause of the child's death will take place in due course and HM Coroner has been informed."

I think one of the worst short straws life can deliver to anyone is to outlive ones own offspring.

This happened not because of accident or war or self harm but because something was not right inside an otherwise young and healthy child and time came when that tiny but vital link gave way and a life was lost.

There may even be a cruel irony to this in that if the defect was known it might well have been easily treatable with a routine surgical procedure and we (rightly) cry havoc and begin to question the politics, policies and economics of our health system.

But we are not gods in control of our own destiny. Just as we may never erase the heartbreaking sight of young children fighting for their lives in cancer wards we may never prevent potential tragedies such as this falling through an imagined safety net that may have prevented it. Life itself will forever be a fragile and finite thing that will have its pitfalls from the moment we take our first step on the road through it.

Our thoughts right now are with the family and the parents who much cope with the awful reality that they have outlived their own child who was taken so early.
