Tonight's TV Pick: Louise Theroux On Autism, Piers Morgan, Grandma's House

Louis Theroux - Extreme Love: Autism

In the first of a two-part documentary, Louis Theroux explores the ups and the downs of living with autism.

At 9pm on BBC2 we are taken to New Jersey to visit one of the most innovative schools for children diagnosed on the autistic spectrum autism.

Autism is a brain disorder which affects the individual’s ability to socialise and communicate. In a country where 1 in every 100 children are diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, the documentary is of unprecedented importance.

Louis approach to the subject is as respectful as ever. He is patient and attentive, allowing families and the youngsters speak at their own pace and in their own words. This is somewhat refreshing after The Undateables’ crass treatment of disability in the UK.

It’s by no means an easy watch – an hour-long emotional rollercoaster through strained family relationships, tantrums and violence – but there are touching moments when optimism shines through and we are left feeling sheer admiration and a better understanding of a wide-spread condition.

In the second episode, Louis explores what it is like living with dementia.

WHAT ELSE IS ON THE TELLY?

Grandma’s House – 10pm, BBC2

Hurrah! Domestic sitcom Grandma’s House is back for a second series.

Simon Amstell struggles against his suburban Jewish family. Linda Bassett, Rebecca Front and Samantha Spiro also star. Expect laughs aplenty.
