Daniel Craig James Bond: Director Of Skyfall 'Didn't Think He Was Right For The Part'

Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig nearly wasn't James Bond

Director Sam Mendes understood the concerns of 007 fans when Daniel Craig was first announced to play James Bond - he was also convinced the hunk was the wrong actor for the iconic role.

Some fans were aghast when Craig was first cast as the suave superspy, arguing he didn't look right for the part.

But Craig proved the sceptics wrong thanks to the commercial and critical success of his debut Bond outing in 2006's Casino Royale, and the director of the new 007 blockbuster Skyfall admits he should not have doubted the actor.

Mendes says: "I was one of the people who said I didn't think he was the right casting. At the time I said, 'I'm not sure. I would advise him not to do it."

But Mendes, who worked with Craig in 2002's Road to Perdition, was delighted when he saw Casino Royale: "I watched him come through that intense pressure with flying colours. I was so excited to see him as Bond."

Skyfall will be Craig's third Bond movie, and is due for release later this year.

Daniel Craig's a terrific actor, but his Bond is too glum. Sean got it just right. George, who I think is under appreciated, got it pretty right, too. Roger was a clown, and almost wrecked the franchise. Timothy and Pierce were place markers.

This is pathetic. Martin Campbell directed Casino Royale. Did he think Craig was wrong for Bond? One assumes not. This Headline Is Wrong. Fix it, for God's sake.

The headline is not wrong. Mendes thought he was wrong for the part. Nothing more.

Whaterver...but I think Danial Craig was good as Michael Bloomkvist.I was skeptical of this new version, now I`ve seen the DVD ,Craig was excellent. I hope they film the other two of the triology.

Daniel Craig has been a worthy heir to Brosnan and those who came before him.

At first I thought the same thing, and also I couldn't imagine a blonde bond, ick.. but he's perfect, so icy cool, composed, deadly and wonderful, great choice!

Daniel Craig, is the closest thing to Ian Fleming's Bond. He's cold, vicious and does anything to serve her majesty's government. So in my mind the perfect James Bond.

Sam Mendes didn't direct Casino Royale! Am I missing something? Why is this headline still up?

Best Bond since Connery. I had stopped going to them for the previous couple.

False. He's easily one of my favorite Bonds. Pierce Brosnan has nothing on him.

Okay, I'll put it this way: would you rather have Dame Judi Dench as a Bond girl (disclaimer: I do think she is a great actor) or would you rather have Sofia Vergera as one and in a bikini? Yeah, just what I thought. So, no differently, us gals like our eye candy too. Craig may have a photo enhanced six pack OR it could actually be his physique, but give me Pierce any day to watch for a couple hours on a movie screen.

It was fairly obvious the director thought this, and yet no one can ever say anything about how perfect he was in the James Bond movie before that he starred in this so called director from HLL used Daniel in scenes that should never have been filmed.. He was a lousy director.
The first movie was perfect. The movie was a success anyway, because Danille craig is a star, and the director of casino royale will never be as famous.

I was in the Clive Owen camp so I was disappointed at the announcement of Daniel Craig too... BUT boy was I wrong! Daniel Craig has been absolutely brilliant! The best Bond in a generation! He's just got that "something" that none of the others have had since Connery!

The only problem with Clive Owen is he tends to bring a bit of emo, not broody, to his parts. While broody Bond is good, emo wouldn't work as well.

I favor more of Sean's light touch.
