Ken Livingstone Boycotts Mayor Debate Over BNP Presence

Posted: 20/04/2012 16:32 Updated: 20/04/2012 19:38

Both Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson have pulled out of a BBC mayoral debate in protest at being asked to share a platform with the British National Party.

The Labour Party candidate for London Mayor said that the far right wanted to "destroy our democracy and stand for the elimination of our basic rights" and had long opposed giving them a platform to express their views.

Diary clashes meant Johnson had not confirmed he would take part in the radio debate, but although a slot had been left open for him to attend, his aides confirmed on Friday evening that he would not share a platform with the BNP.

Livingstone insisted that the BNP "cannot be treated as a legitimate part of politics," adding: “I am withdrawing from Monday’s mayoral debate on BBC London 94.9 on the grounds that I am not prepared to share a platform with the British National Party," he said.

‘We have been in negotiation about a debate with the main candidates for BBC London 94.9 – but only now have we been informed that the BNP had been invited to take part in this debate, and this has been confirmed to us today.

“I will not share a platform with the BNP and it is a point of principle to me that I never will do."

On Friday it was reported that the BNP candidate for mayor, Carlos Cortiglia, had said he would be giving his second preference vote to Livingstone - an endorsement that the former Labour mayor hasn't welcomed.

“That the BNP candidate may have called for a second preference for me is clearly designed to disorganise progressive opinion and divide opposition to them," Livingstone said.

"Not only don’t I want their second preference but I will not share a platform with them. I urge everyone to use their vote on 3 May to vote to keep the BNP out."

According to the Mayor Watch website Green candidate Jenny Jones has also withdrawn from the debate.

I agree with Freedom of Speech and healthy debate. The question is, would this be a healthy debate or just another platform to air political views and vent racist ideologies? It is a bit like the platform given to Anders Breivik to air his views in the Norwegian courts. Are they really going to come up for a plan to improve the lot of all of Londoners, or just chant out the old "poor us and it's all the foreigners' fault"?
Whether we like it or not, we are a multi-cultural society; they are here as British citizens with as many rights as the rest of us. That cannot be undone. Whether a debate on controlling further immigration is called for is a completely different matter and one of national policy. It is not relevant to the running of London, which should be concentrating on integration and making it a better place for everyone to live in.

this country is not democratic the majority of our politicians come from a very small pool of people anyone outside this group is unwelcome and will be bought down the combined weight of our rulers.

If Livingstone the dictator does not want to share the platform, then he should remove his name from the ballot paper as it too is shared.

Livingstone insisted that the BNP cannot be treated as a legitimate part of politics. They are, and how un democratic of him to say so. Does he wish to flout the law on free speech for others apart from himself?

Both are afraid that Cortiglia will mention Livingstone and Johnson's failure's that have cost Londoner's untold millions and millions of pounds. The failed transport system that has been turned into the most expensive in the world.

It would appear the controlers of this comments page agree with the candidates.

These grown men, political giants, act like kids out of control when it comes to real debate and democracy. Are they afraid the BNP will show up Livingstone and Johnson's. Afraid perhaps the BNP will mention Livingstones tax evasion methods yet insists everyone else pays the full amount. Afraid the BNP will mention Johnson's policies have harmed and have cost Londoners dearly. Afraid that the BNP will mention that Livingstone and Johnson failed miserably to get London's transport system right yet have suceeded in turning it into the most expensive in the WORLD. Afraid that millions upon millions of Londoners pounds have been wasted on failed projects.

Livingstone and Johnson have used the "Get Out of Jail Free card" in order to avoid the real issues that Londoner's are concerned with that the BNP will most probably bring to light.

If Livingstone, Johnson and Jones are so disgusted by appearing on the program (sharing the platform) then they should also not allow their names to appear on the ballot papers along with the BNP.

Livingstone insisted that the BNP "cannot be treated as a legitimate part of politics. How very un-democratic of him to say so and there I was thinking that free speech has been written into the law.....the same free speech that Livingstone supports.

Only fascist would rule out freedom of speech regardless of you like it of not, democracy is all about freedom of speech. It is not about a choice of what you like to hear, and ban what you do not like to hear. That Livingstone and Boris walk away show that they do not want freedom of speech and not to hear other opinions then their own. That is not democracy that is fascism it its purest of forms. That green will not come is just running behind the bandwagen, Democracy is to hear and to listen to all, ignore what you do not like and embrace what you like. the fascist style of Ken and Boris have no place in this. Neither has the BNP as a party but as long it is allowed by law, nobody has a right to deny them platform.

Nick Griffin leader of the the BNP said
"At 13, I read Mein Kampf, making notes in the margins… I remember thinking, are the Jews really that bad? The chapter I most enjoyed was the one on propaganda and organisation there are some really useful ideas there."

Like it or not, the BNP has support in Britain (albeit from misguided people).

Unfortunately, Labour has support in Britain, too - after the fiasco of the Brown-Blair period, shouldn't we ban Labour policicians from appearing on t.v.?

(You see where censorship gets you...? Most British people don't want the BNP, Labour, or even the present coalition...)

In Germany the Nazis gained power because some of the parties did not keep them at a distance. Whatever theri failings in other fields Boris and Ken deserve praise for doing the decent thing.
