Moyra Liz As-Chainey was last seen early on Wednesday morning

Police searching for a missing teenage girl have found a body.

Sixteen-year-old Moyra Liz As-Chainey was last seen at 8.30am on Wednesday at her home in the village of Edderton, Easter Ross.

The body was discovered in woods near Edderton at about 4pm on Friday, Northern Constabulary said.

Around 50 people took part in a large-scale hunt for the girl on Thursday, whose disappearance was said to be totally out of character.

An RAF search and rescue helicopter, mountain rescue teams, coastguards, police and four search and rescue dogs were all involved.

Police teams - joined by partners from other agencies - continued with a concentrated search in the Edderton area on Friday and found the body.

Although it has not been formally identified, the search has been stood down and the teenager's family has been informed of the discovery.

Police said it was too early to say whether or not the death was suspicious.

Moyra is originally from the Netherlands and a fifth-year pupil at Tain Royal Academy.

School rector Donnie MacLeod said: "News of Moyra's disappearance is a real concern to staff, pupils and people in the community who know her."

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "The search for Moyra has now been stood down and police would like to thank the public for their support throughout.

"A Police Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the family at this difficult time.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

It is interesting that, so soon as the police state that there are no suspicious circumstances i.e. no offender to try, leading to sub judice considerations, Huff Post closes comment. It would have been more sensible to ban the comments below, and free them for your second, more current, report

Sad.

Before you jump to conclusions I was brought up in that area(ish) and there is a high suicide rate up there particularly in that age group. I would not be surprised if that's the case here. Very sad.

My thoughts are with her family. RIP Moyra, you didn't deserve to die

People are saying that they hope its not Moyra, but the police must at the very least know the body is that of a young girl, so if its not her, then its another young girl of similar age, so equally tragic. No parent can protect their children 24 hours a day. I always feel that I want to wrap my daughters, and come to that, my son, up in cotton-wool and keep them safe, but at the same time, they've got to be able to live their lives! The vast majority of people in this world are good, but it's the small minority of evil-doers that 'make the most noise'. Whoever they've found, may she rest in peace, and I pray for the family and friends, that they may at some point in the future, find their own peace.

Reading these comments certainly made my eyes water. Its not right that a woman or young girl cannot walk the streets in safety. but then again, it the governments fault for allowing so many convicted rapists walk free on our streets. My thoughts are with her parents

I guess if they have stood down the search then they are pretty certain it is her... just sad beyond words. It was only 10 years ago that I was 16 and I can't imagine life being extinguished at that age, everything is so exciting at that age with life stretched out before you. I will hold out hope that it is not her and she is safe and sound.. I don't want to say RIP quite yet.

RIP Moyra. She looked like such a lovely girl, and to have her life taken away is awful. I hope they find the person that did this, and lock them up and throw away the key. Noone deserves to have their life taken so young. I agree with the other comments, bring back capital punishment. Hopefully then innocent lives will not be taken. RIP i hope you are in a better place now x

RIP, Moyra looks like such a lovely girl, noone deserves to have their life come to an end so young. I send my best wishes and thoughts to her family. I am the same age of Moyra, and it scares me, how people can go round committing crimes like this. I agree with some of the other comments, bring back capital punishment. Maybe then horrible crimes which claim innocent lives will help to be stopped. RIP Moyra, I hope you are in a better place now x

If it isn't her it's another young girl, same thing, as bad, as tragic. Another set of parents' lives destroyed.

It has always been similar.
Nowadays communications and news are almost instant.
100 years ago you may never have known about anything that
happened out of your locallity.

True but I do think there are far more murders these days.

This link seems to put forward a reasonable argument that shows a near 100% rise in (homocides) in the UK and takes into account population growth.
