Royal Mail

Postal workers today pledged to step up opposition to Royal Mail privatisation, warning that the sell-off would be a "disaster" for the industry.

The Communication Workers Union called on Labour to make it clear that the party will renationalise the postal group if it wins the next general election.

Delegates at the union's annual conference in Bournemouth expressed their "total opposition" to the Government's plans to privatise the Royal Mail and set out plans to "reinvigorate" their campaign.

General secretary Billy Hayes said the union was sending a strong message to firms "circling" the Royal Mail by making it clear that privatisation was not necessary.

"Privatisation would be a disaster for this industry, and while there is life in this union we will continue campaigning to keep the post public."

Deputy leader Dave Ward said the Labour party should be put on the spot and pledge to renationalise any parts of the Royal Mail which are sold off by the coalition, as well as reverse the "disastrous" police of liberalisation brought in by the previous Labour regime.

North east delegate John Woodhouse said: "There is no moral or economic case for privatising the Royal Mail. Post offices will be under threat, prices will go through the roof and the universal service will disappear into the sunset."

The conference agreed an emergency motion to continue campaigning against privatisation and to press Labour to repeal the postal service act which paved the way to the sell-off.

Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene will address the CWU conference on Wednesday.

It would be disasterous for Royal Mail as it would exposed what c**p service they actually give!

several problems at present with, firstly, the historic resistance to modernisation by the CWU and others that have kept costs higher. Secondly the hiving off of profitable activities at the behest of the E C and allwomng private firms to cream off the asy part of the business whiost not allowing the Royal mail to charge such firms a profiitable rate.
I believe that the Royal Mail should be kept in the public sector and, indeed, should be given back the parcles and packets business along with all mail collection and sorting.

I also believe that there should be a prohibition on foreign ownership of vital sectors of our economy e.g. transport, power generation and suppky and medicine but that is not at issue with mail- yet.

Every privatiation has resulted in a poorer more expensive service. We were told that private investers would invest their money in the railways to make improvements yet we the taxpayer are still subsidising the industry, passengers are paying some of the highest fares in Europe, and the newer trains have fewer seats. We were told that private investers would invest in our water industries to improve service, reduce bills and reduce leakages yet water companies are still losing millions of gallons of water each month whilst we face hosepipe bans and huge bills. We were told that investers would invest in our energy companies and that competition would reduce prices we pay yet we are being overcharged, having to choose between a multitude of pricing schemes and paying much higher bills. It's time to take the leeches out of our essential services and re-nationalise them. Leave Royal Mail as a goverment owned business and make the other delivery companies deliver their own mail.

I don't think it could get much poorer than it already is. As for expensive, just read the recent news!

Labour to save Royal Mail? LOL!!! It was thanks to them that Royal Mail is in such a mess. During their 13 years in government Labour has made this country the 'Yes Men' of Europe, doing everything the EU told it to do including deregulating the mail service in such a manner that Royal Mail has to compete on an uneven playing field. This allowed other companies such as TNT, DHL and UK Mail to come in and cherry-pick the most lucrative business markets then dump their mail onto Royal Mail for the final delivery stage. The regulator forced RM to take it's competitors' mail at a loss of 2p per item, forcing RM to make drastic changes to reduce that loss. In the meantime RM has lost half it's business mail to those other firms and the fall in revenue means that it can no longer 'cross subsidise' social (or stamped) mail which RM has handled at a loss for many years as it has to go out to collect it from pillar boxes wherever they may be. If those other firms want to compete against Royal Mail, let them but make them deliver their own mail.
If Royal Mail is privatised how are Labour going to renationalise it should they ever return to power when there is no money left after they nearly bankrupted this country last time they were in? Do it Zimbabwean style, like they did with Railtrack and just sieze it off it's shareholders?

At the end of the day, practically every aspect of the Royal Mail's developments result from decisions taken by the EU - whether it be how mail is priced, or what to do with the pension funds. These are well documented but barely reported. The sums involved, and the sheer level of control by the EU, mean that UK governments cannot do what they have done in the past - easily subsidise a state provider of mail services. So calling on a member state government to do something about national mail services is a bit too late.

Next step will be ....... make posties redundant and you pick your post up from the sorting office.
Watch this space ...

The Royal Mail in its present form has got to go. I live near one of the worst performing major sorting offices in the country. When you see the state of the staff getting on the bus to get to it, you can understand why the RM is such a mess. There are many for who English is not the first language, there are many who are drunk, along with many who look like they can barely dress themselves. This office has amongst the highest rate of loss, delayed and suspected theft amongst the main sorting offices. The CWU won't deal with that, it spouts nonsense defending the staff without ever realising that it, its members and the RM have to be dragged out of the 1960s and into the 21st Century!
The RM is losing money hand over fist, it's a case of modernise, or die!

The Unions have only got themselves to blame for the demise of Royal Mail, but I don't see why the taxpayer should pick up the bill for the pension fund to make it more attractive to sell it off.
08:53 PM on 04/22/2012
Sell it off. Its over priced itself and the service has gone downhill. Its trying to make a profit before it can deliver a decent service . A different postman each time if I am lucky or no post at all. The other week I got post about six o clock in the evening and this has happened several times. I can no longer trust this company with my mail.
08:23 AM on 04/23/2012
True, do you remember when we also had a second delivery!!!
09:30 AM on 04/23/2012
Yes I do john `that`s when they used to run a proper efficient service `now its about profit not service.

They may as well privatise RM and be done with it... There's nothing left to sell off after that only the armed forces, the royal family and parliament.... What would they get for parliament and the buffoons who infest the place?

i agree with most the mail has gone back a lot i wouldnt like to see it privatised there cant be many british firms owned by british people its disgracefull all these rich people getting rich out of the government there must be a hell of a lot of backhanders flying about thats why english people have lost the will to graft like in the old days because they are getting nothing to show for it ,its like these agenceis i only worked once for one when they first started i thought why should i work for 60 hrs or more and get 6 poundsan hour and the agencey was getting 12pds an hour so i was working hard to pay them for just makeing a phone call and i think the tories started that its just a sham

Privatising the postal services will result in the same scenario as deregulating the bus routes. Services galore to the city and large town centers but none off the beaten track.

For an industry that cares more about its workers than getting the job done, is it any surprise that the time has come to privatise the Royal Mail. The number of deliveries has been cut. The number of collections has been cut. I pay for a first class stamp and get second class service. Once upon a time one could catch the last post and your letter would arrive the following morning, now its 2 days at most times.

In the 1960's I started collecting first day issues, but since the cutbacks to postal services they now arrive damaged, bent and torn so I have to send them back for replacements. It seems postal office workers and delivery staff don't seem to understand the words DO NOT BEND

They do not understand do not steal either.

Why NOT privatize the Army,The Navy and the Territorial Guard? Why NOT. By what I am HEARING the "government" is incapable of doing a thing "right". You know WHY this isn't an option? Because some tof hasn;t figured out a way to make a Pound off of it yet...as soon as they do, the Army, Navy, Air Force and Commandos will go out to the "highest" (good old boy) bidder. Nonsense. The Post Office worked GREAT for decades...we get our mail most of the time, nothing is perfect, and under the current scheme someone is accountable..go private and NOBODY will be held for the mistakes....plus, a bloated Post Office creates JOBS and taxpayers and families and they in turn buy products which help out he rest of us..if ALL we are interested in is PROFIT for the FEW, then lets get rid of the NHS and all BUY HEALTH INSURANCE at ruinous rates like in the United States....
08:22 AM on 04/23/2012
Actually health insurance in the states is very cheap compared to what the working man pays here in NI
