Alzheimers Patient
Footage from the Panorama show due to be aired on Monday night

Footage of an Alzheimer's sufferer being repeatedly beaten by a member of staff at a care home will be screened on Monday night.

The clips claim to show an elderly resident being manhandled by carers at Ash Court Care Centre in Kentish Town, London last year, including one member of staff slapping the elderly lady. On some occasions, she was put to bed at 5.30pm while carers watched television in her room

The footage, which will be aired on BBC's Panorama, was caught after Maria Worroll's daughter Jane hid a camera in her room.

Jonathan Aquino, 30, was jailed earlier this month for the assault on Mrs Worroll. The Filipino was sentenced to 18 months in jail at Blackfriars Crown Court.

Four of Aquino's female colleagues have since been sacked by the operators of the home, Forest Healthcare, after it reviewed the footage, the documentary says.

This is the first time the footage will be aired.

Despite suffering from acute arthritis, Mrs Worroll, 80, was said to be manhandled by her carers and on occasion put to bed at only 5.30pm.

On other occasions carers would not greet Mrs Worroll but instead turn on a television to watch while they were in her room, it is claimed.

The documentary also says that one evening's footage, filmed in June 2011, shows a male carer striking Mrs Worroll six times on the face, arms and abdomen.

Mrs Worroll was subsequently transferred to a different home.

The Care Quality Commission, the industry watchdog, awarded the care home an 'excellent' rating in July 2009, two years before the attacks.

A subsequent report, produced four months after the incidents, also failed to mention that charges were pending over the incidents, it is claimed.

Judy Downey, head of charity The Relatives & Residents Association, said: "It doesn't say that a member of staff has been charged. It is not an honest document, it isn't a helpful document and it isn't a decent document.

"This is an area where the CQC can do so much if it uses its powers. They can actually cancel the provider's registration if they're shown not to be fit. We would suggest that the provider was very clearly shown not to be fit."

Jonathan Aquino needs to be deported as soon as his sentence is completed. We don't need his sort int he country.

You can judge a nation by the way it looks after the children the sick the needy and how it worships the elderly, civilisations over the centuries have often failed the needs of its people but not until now have they dishonoured their elderly.

The elderly in this country are beaten up in the streets and their homes rob of all that means anything to them, robed of the wealth by financial institutions. Taxed into desperation by politicians, priced out of their homes by our welfare system, the country starves them of financial freedom with pensions below human decency. Should they have been able to save for their retirement the politicians have no shame as the continually change the rules to enable the tax take to increase.

The rule makers locally and national force their utopia of elderly care driven by political ideology no matter the consequences upon the venerable. The drive towards privatisation forcing closure of homes of all types run by social services no matter of need of the individual has and will continue to kill.

The private sector is all about profit where labour is cheap if they could get away with paying less than minimum wage they would, the increase of foreign labour courses great suffering for the elderly. Language skills are low and the elderly find it difficult not just hearing them but also understanding them, training is questionable and standards are low.

This country dishonours its elderly and should hang its head in shame.

Thank goodness for spy cameras. Care workers with sub human intelligence and no human morals need to know that they will be caught and charged if they abuse their elderly patients. But I do feel bad for those elders who do not have relatives to advocate for them. I can only imagine that many, many elders in homes are being treated this badly and worse.

It's a disgrace & the health service has been turning a blind eye for years. It seems some health & care workers assume they are above the law & can get away with it. The patient can / will never be right or be believed.

This was in a care HOME not the health service.

I know! It happens in both! It's been happening for many years especially in Mental Health Hospitals.
05:51 PM on 04/23/2012
Nothing new, this sort of thing happens in the NHS too. Mental health hospitals it rife! The Parliamentary Health Ombudsman is a waste of space & doesn't investigate any forms of bad practice.

Everytime I read these stories it winds me up!

There is a big difference between CARERS, and CARE WORKERS. Care Workers are the ones who are employed by a company to go and look after someone. Carers are often members of the family who must look after their mother, father, daughter whoever, on a daily basis.

It is wrong that CARERS are being made out to be the awful ones, when actually they're doing a damn good job. I wish the press and media would take a little more care when writing stories like this.

It shows how little interest is shown when dealing with the elderly, the amount of comments are shockingly low. We are all getting old day by day ,it creeps up on you without you noticing. Some people as they get older depend on help from others and should recieve kindness and patience Remember one it could. be any one of us, who need that help. Some thing should be done now, to stop these home from operating. For the amount of money they charge, these homes should be heaven on earth.

Problem is that most care homes are about profit once they are in private ownership, added to that the low cost options that most councils go for, and sad to say this is a major part of the problem, in reality most staff in the private sector are on a pittance compared with the HCA's at a hospital and in most cases are expected to do much more for their small remuneration, therefor most carers I know are on 48 hours as a basic with some doing 60+ to make ends meet, discusting you might say but would you be willing to pay the real worth of the job?
11:05 PM on 04/23/2012
Totally agree - and don't forget the consistent understaffing.

upon reading some of these comments on here I would like to say Please DO NOT tarr all Carer's in Care Homes for the Elderly with the same brush.
I am a Carer and I can assure you that the home I work is is one of the Best. all my work mates are all Caring individuals and the Residents always come first. The home I work in is a charity and is not all about how much money can we make. we rely on donations to keep the hom e running.
people cannot know what it's like to be a Carer unless they have worked in the role.
unfortunately nothing in the media is said about the good homes

Keep up the good work.

I am a senior male care worker, and stories like this sicken me to my stomach, how in Gods name can these people live with themselves? I would like to say that these b******s are few and far between , (thank God), and how would they feel if it was their parents being treated like this? Also to the penny pinching beurocrats, you may be saving a few bob by getting a cheap placement for a client , but look at what you are paying for.

It's not profitable to look after our children or the elderly...however war for natural resources and arms sales is.

I hope that this swine is deported the instant that he comes out of jail. The Rhondda Cynon Taff Council in our area has just slashed the pay and conditions of our carers. We pay them the least and treat them appallingly and what happens, well the good move on and only the ones that cannot get work elsewhere are left to care for people.Time we showed that being a carer is an important job and screened and treated people properly. Anyone who is unkind in the slightest should be sacked.

That is just it, people work in care because they are loving people who do it because they care, not for the money. As soon as you bring money into this area, things begin going horribly wrong.

Loving people should still be paid for the work they do. Elderly people do not enter care homes when they are fit and able. The care workers still have bills to pay they are not volunteers.
