Preview: Out Of Focus - New Photography At The Saatchi Gallery

What Does Photography Mean Today?

What does photography mean today? 38 photographers from all over the world offer their perspective in a new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery.

Out Of Focus is the first major photography exhibition at the London gallery since 2001’s I Am a Camera, which featured Tierney Gearon's controversial photographs of naked children and examined the way that photographs and paintings influence one another.

The work on display aims to challenge the rules and perceptions of photography at a time when the industry is experiencing both complex and diverse challenges - with the huge presence of photography online, lines have been blurred between what is professional and what is amateur, what is documentary, art and fashion. Indeed, questions are even being raised about the notion of whether photographers are artists.

Many pieces in the exhibition share themes of the body, gender, mind, memory, place, family and culture, but while some take a classic documentary approach, others rework found images, and some assemble original 3D work from photographs.

Exhibiting artists include Katy Grannan, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Michele Abeles, John Stezaker, Yumiko Utsu and Elina Brotherus.

Out Of Focus runs from 25 April - 22 July at The Saatchi Gallery London.
