St George's Day Google Doodle

St George's Day Google Doodle

St George may not have even been English, and the dragon may not have existed either, but that's no reason not to celebrate St George's day Google Doodle-style.

The special illustration on Google.com marks not only England's national day, but the 30th anniversary of the release of the classic eighties computer, the ZX Spectrum.

It's rendered in classic eight-bit style, with all the colour limitations eighties computer users were accustomed to. They're so ironically hot right now, but back then, that was the only choice.

If you're old enough to remember, the British-made ZX spectrum computer with its squishy rubber keys was it-and-a-bit in home computing.

Before the Apple v. PC wars, the ZX spectrum by Sinclair Research and its flashy rainbow stripe was the iPad of its day.

By today's standard, the spec is quaint, if not laughable. It had just 48K memory, a 3.5MHz Z80 microprocessor, it made a beeping sound, had an external expansion port and used audio tapes to store data.

Could you imagine giving up your dual-core processor and Retina screen for that?
