Woman Wins Virginia Lottery Twice In One Day, Scooping $2 Million (VIDEO)

Most of the time, accidentally buying the same lottery ticket twice - with the same exact numbers, 5, 13, 17, 20 and 30 - would be thought of as a pretty silly thing to do.

After all, if the chances of winning at all are so high, winning twice on the same day would be near impossible, right? Wrong, as it turns out - and Virginia Fike from Berryville, Virginia has the supersized $2 million cheque to prove it.

Of course, after tax her haul is slightly smaller - a still respectable $1.4 million, mind - but there's not doubt about it: she's a very lucky lady indeed.

But why those numbers? And why twice? "I picked numbers based on my parents’ anniversary and their ages at that time, divided by the year they were married," Fike told The Journal, assing "I was like, 'If I win, I win twice'… so I just went ahead and took the tickets."

Well played, Virginia from Virginia, well played indeed. You now join Huffington Post UK's 'amazing lottery winners' hall of fame, you lucky thing - which is like winning another $2 million, right? Wait, don't answer that.

That was a stroke of luck for her. The only other time it would pay to play the same numbers twice at the same lottery would be if there was another winner, they would get one third of the prize and she would get two thirds of the prize.

Every once in awhile my husband and I play the same number if, we don't know the other has already bought the tickets. We have two numbers we always play.

The odds are so great of losing I would rather take my chances with two tickets that have different numbers than two that have the same numbers.

You pay tax on the UK lottery - when you purchase the ticket - that's why the winnings are tax free. Same as horse racing, pay the tax on the bet and the winnings are tax free......

There's a difference from paying £1 for a lottery ticket and an extra 50 or so pence tax then a winnings from $2m down to $1.4m...

Not really - you pay the tax percentage based upon the "bet" - as does everyone else, including the great majority of people people who don't win - which makes several million for the UK Government and the payout is then "tax free" (tax paid actually).....

The difference is the USA lotteries don't give you the option to pay the tax as you place your "bet" - so tax has to be paid on the winnings.

Tax on the lottery? God how stupid is the American lottery if you have to pay tax on the lottery lol. One of many reasons why the UK is a better country.
