Jeremy Hunt's Adviser Adam Smith Resigns Over Alleged Links To News Corp

Posted: 25/04/2012 11:25 Updated: 25/04/2012 11:32

Jeremy Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith has resigned his position at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, in the wake of the row over his links to News Corporation.

A statement issued by the department on his behalf on Wednesday said: “While it was part of my role to keep News Corporation informed throughout the BskyB bid process, the content and extent of my contact was done without authorisation from the Secretary of State."

"I do not recognise all of what Fred Michel said, but nonetheless I appreciate that my activities at times went too far and have, taken together, created the perception that News Corporation had too close a relationship with the department, contrary to the clear requirements set out by Jeremy Hunt and the permanent secretary that this needed to be a fair and scrupulous process.

"Whilst I firmly believe that the process was in fact conducted scrupulously fairly, as a result of my activities it is only right for me to step down as special adviser to Jeremy Hunt."

In light of what seems an orchestrated move to temporarily deflect the blame, I do hope that Jeremy Hunt's Adviser Adam Smith will be called by Lord Justice Leveson. If not, why not? This young 'scapegoat' is in the best position to enlighten us all, including Leveson.

Jeremy Hunt is in charge, so he should take the fall, the fair and decent thing for him to do. This young man's career should not suffer as a result of a politician's moral compass being out of direction, so Adam Smith should be reinstated forthwith. I hope the young man seeks advice from a top law firm. Vicarious liability still applies even within the Civil Service, and if privately employed by the Culture Secretary, vicarious liability will apply to that too.

I watched Hunt's speech in the HOC this lunchtime. He was clearly biased, I had that impression way back when he delivered his first speech re BskyB, because leading up to the time when Business Secretary,Vince Cable, had the BskyB business taken out of his hands, because he had owned up to being against the BskyB deal, Jeremy Hunt admitted being in favour of the deal, so what is good for the goose is surely good for the gander, clearly Hunt should not have been considered for the task in the first place. Is this impartiality? Definitely not,! It's crystal clear to me the issue should have been referred to the Competition Commission, as recommended by Ofcom. Oh no, they carry on their own sweet way, and these are the people we vote into power, whatever next, they are impervious of what we, Joe Public, want or think, they could not care less. So the meaning of the word thick comes to mind, impervious, unable to penetrate!

JH can't use the excuse......'it wasn't me it was someone in my office' He's in charge and therefore responsible for the actions of his staff.
In dealing with such a major takeover and the implications for the impartiality of the press and media in this country, no-one but the minister should have been dealing with the Murdochs and all meetings and correspondence should have been minuted and witnessed.
Mr Hunt has failed in his duty to deal with the most powerful media mogul in this country, if not the world, with fairness and objectivity.
The whole thing stinks to high heaven and his statements and excuses so farare prettylame and don't ring true.
However, Labour should get down of their high horses and remember how close a certain Anthony Blair was to the Murdochs....Harman and Milliband need to back off before the whole thing backfires on them.

There goes the first scapegoat....whose next?
Cameron will keep JH in place as long as possible letting him take the heat and diverting attention from the cosy Christmas lunches he enjoyed with Murdoch and his minions at Ms Brooks house.

Why did Cameron have dinner with Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks the day after Vince Cable was dropped and Hunt appointed to oversee the BSkyB bid of Murdoch? Doubt if the dinner chat was confined to horses..

I suspect this is one of many heads to roll over the Leveson inquiry which is showing just how incestuous the relationship between the government, police and the media is.

I do not believe this statement for one minute.

Neither will the British public.

I think that Rupert Murdoch has little to lose now, and will, like, a cornered rat throw David Cameron to the crowd. I would like to be in that particular crowd!
