PMQs: Ed Miliband Says 'Shadow Of Sleaze' Hangs Over Government

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 25/04/2012 12:42 Updated: 25/04/2012 13:25

The "shadow of sleaze" now hangs over the government in the wake of fresh revelations about its links to News Corporation, Ed Miliband has told MPs.

In angry exchanges at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday the Labour leader told David Cameron that it was "time to stop putting his cronies before the interest of the country".

Miliband tackled the prime minister in the Commons moments after Jeremy Hunt's special adviser quit his post over allegations he had aided News Corp in its bid to take control of BSkyB in 2010.

"It beggars belief that the prime minister can defend the culture secretary, he wasn't judging this bid, he was helping the bid by News Corporation," Miliband told the Commons.

"He [Hunt] and his office were providing a constant flow of confidential information to News Corporation about statements to be made in this House in advance, his private discussions with regulators and his discussions with opposing parties."

David Cameron said he was not going to "pre-judge" the outcome of the Leveson inquiry but insisted Hunt had his "full support for the excellent job that he does".

"In judging this important bid the culture secretary sought independent advice from independent regulators at every stage, although he did not need to," he said.

However the prime minister admitted that "we all did too much cosying up to Rupert Murdoch".

Miliband also attacked the coalition for its handling of the economy following news the UK had slipped back into recession.

"Today we had the catastrophic news that Britain is back in recession, I am sure the PM has spent the last 24 hours of thinking of an excuse as to why tis nothing to do with him," he said.

"This is recession made by him and the chancellor in Downing Street."

Cameron said he would not deviate from his plan to cut the deficit and public spending.

"There is not a single business organisation or serous commentator or international body who thinks these problems emerged in the last 24-months," he said.

He says that while he had expressed sympathy for the Murdoch bid before he was made responsible for judging on it, he became genuinely impartial once it was handed to him from Vince Cable.

Can someone remind Milliband which political party "Mr sleazy Blair" represented?

We don't all have very short memories like Milliband, Balls and the rest of the Labour elite......

Ah, but Labour supporters have VERY short memories. It's part of their training - always blame someone else when things go wrong!

Given the condition of the UK, these MP's could really do with actually exchanging words to benefit the UK - trying to gain popularity with the public by highlighting the corrupt efforts of the guy across the room is pointless - when every one of them has a moral compass so screwed up, they all needed ipads to navigate them to work in the morning!

Then the working class should get itself educated instead of swallowing a loutish pseudo-culture and bleating all the time about how everyone else is to blame for things going wrong.

"Shadow Of Sleaze' Hangs Over Government"
That spectre’s shade casts gloom, ‘cross the very Palace of Misadminister sirrah.

“stop putting his cronies before the interest of the country".
Else his chestnuts might soon be roasting ‘fore an open fire.

"he was not going to "pre-judge" the outcome of the Leveson inquiry but"
promised nothing regarding a post-judging of it.

"we all did too much cosying up to Rupert Murdoch".
With particular regard to the gallivanting. But that, is a (police) horse of a different colour.

"the catastrophic news that Britain is back in recession,"
may relate in part to the huge loans we keep taking out. To keep the IMF in the luxury to which it has become accustomed.

"‘tis nothing to do with him,"
‘Twas two villains, hence, with other names i’faith.

"This is recession made by him and the chancellor in Downing Street."
It is difficult to conceive, of how they got something that big out through such a small door.

"There is not a single business organisation or serous commentator or international body who thinks these problems emerged in the last 24-months," he said."
Nor one who in private doesn’t concede, are prolonged by our increasing payments of Drain Geld.

Get the hunt lobby onto this I say! Instead of protecting foxes protect the integrety of the Government, oops sorry its gone!!! More lies and deception...again! How much more can we take? Thank goodness for weekends, no sleeze in the papers.
02:41 PM on 04/25/2012
So how is your recession going? I'm over in the US and its not going well over hear. It will probably be worse if the republicans take over.
02:39 PM on 04/25/2012
The usual combination of sleeze and incompetnce is already rising like a tide, as we expect from a Tory government. Ed as usual is too weak and too late in exploiting the rising tide of revulsion and disgust felt by all thinking people to this exposure of "business as usual" from our "betters"..
12:14 AM on 04/26/2012
"Ed" is on marshy ground - left by those who came before him..

David Cameron said he was not going to "pre-judge" the outcome of the Leveson inquiry but insisted Hunt had his "full support for the excellent job that he does"...........

Uh oh ! - That kind of statement is the classic kiss-of-political-death to any member of the government, especially a Tory one. Remember John Major ? How many cabinet colleagues did he "have absolute faith and complete trust in...." before they disappeared into Westminster's Bermuda (political) 'Triangle' ?!!!!
Chin up Mr Hunt - won't be long now !

"Sleaze" is to be found wherever a Miliband lands.
08:52 AM on 04/26/2012
How can Miliband find sleaze? Cameron has it all locked away
01:29 PM on 04/25/2012
It's one thing to seek advice from independant regulators but

1) Who are the regulators and are they really independant, and

2) It's quite obvious that he also got advice from Cameron's Chums.

The whole business stinks.

Hunt must go - and Camreon should think about his own future and get out now before he's pushed.
