Third Of Brits Steal From Self-Service Supermarket Checkouts

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 26/04/2012 13:45 Updated: 26/04/2012 13:45

The self-service checkouts were designed to speed up lengthy queues – but supermarkets have unwittingly created a generation of self-service shoplifters.

A recent study of nearly 5,000 people by watchmywallet.co.uk revealed that a third of Brits steal food items by slipping them into their bag without passing the food through the scanner.

Other indiscretions reported in the study ranged from opportunistic to brazen.

Just over 2% admitted to tampering with the scales when paying for something by weight, 7% bagged an item without scanning it first and 5% claimed to have simply walked away from the checkout without paying.

Although the machine is able to detect an ‘unexpected item in bagging area’ when the food has not been scanned, shop assistant tend to swiftly override the ‘error’ allowing the self-service cheat to sneak off with their purchases.

And if they’re not pinching the food items, they are shaving pennies off the price by ‘tricking’ the machine into thinking they are purchasing lower cost goods or selecting ‘small’ instead of ‘large’ when scanning items such as salad boxes.

Have you ever stolen from a self-service checkout?

I once tried to smash a self-service checkout after calling it a "f#@king Dalek" when it crashed three times in a row despite the assistant's best efforts.

Does that count?

I have never in my life shop lifted, tampered with the scales or tried to make off without paying and I find it very hard to believe that a third of my fellow citizens are engaging in what is criminal activity. Thieving magpies.

In certain chains of supermarkets you could use a coil device to make a powerful electromagnetic signal to make the machines restart. Seems to be ineffective since late 2011 - those were the glory days... My family ate like kings!

I am surprised the figure is only third. Perhaps this figure is specific to supermarket's self-check-outs. But from my experience working all kinds of people, I would say that 99.99% of people are criminals. Those who don't steal from checkouts will steal on travel expenses, taxes, council tax or any other thing they think they may get away with. And that applies to the poor as well as the rich. Actually, the rich are the biggest criminals in the world!

Don't you just love living a life of honesty?

"A recent study of nearly 5,000 people by watchmywallet.co.uk revealed that a third of Brits steal food items by slipping them into their bag without passing the food through the scanner."

It then goes on to say "7% bagged an item without scanning it first", 7% is not, never has been and never will be one third.

That's a very good point.

Maybe people are following the Government example that it is quite correct to lie and steal

One third of how many Britons? The 60 million who live here? One third of those who use self-checkouts? Figure is meaningless without knowing which Britons are being discussed
17:34 on 04/06/2012
I'd guess that a lot of those "Britons" are in fact not British.
16:14 on 04/06/2012
One third of people - that's 20 million IF Huff have got the facts right
Makalha
Opinions are not facts.
19:15 on 04/06/2012
I doubt that 20 million even use self checkouts .....
15:27 on 04/06/2012
To be completely Honest this is a complete and utter load of BS

I do believe that this was covered, on this same site only 2-3 months ago, claiming 10-15% of people stole stuff through self service checkouts, now apparently 33% of us are doing it?
Where the hell do these "journalists" if we can call them that, get this information?
Prison? Day release? Parole officers?

If someone has shoplifted by not putting the goods through the scanner, surely the door alarm would go off. Get back to the till system, employ more till staff and heighten security. One security person for one supermarket is not enough.

I agree Sammy, the supermarkets who operate this type of checkout are asking for trouble. I remember some years ago Safeway brought in scanners so customers cold scan they're items, then when they'd finished, they'd put the scan gun back in the scan holder and it would tell you how much your total was. Occasionaly the slip would come out, telling you to go to a manned checkout, but rarely. They lost millions and it was finally scrapped.

Phil - Obviously not enough thought went into the consequences and they suffered the loss. Modern technology needs to be well checked out before installation. Back to the old tills. If I receive a reply from you and I don't reply don't think I've got the HUFF, I am having a problem getting into my notifications. Have reported it to Huff so we'll see how long it takes to resolve the situation.

What would trigger the alarm? Beans don't have electronic security tags on them, like whisky bottles and DVDs do

If stores wish to work without staff they take the risk ,like subways with out workers ,or maybe in the future the planes will be unmaned ,Do you have a job you like working? How will people out of work buy the products stores sell?If you make a below a liveable wage you might be forced to steal for food for your family. I work ,have a great UNION good pay good pension .I can aford to buy furniture ,trips, cars, pay bills. What do you think of this new fad of self service check out?

They're coming to take me away ha ha, hee hee, ho

I have no idea why, but when I try to use these self service tills they go haywire. I always end up having a member of staff coming over to scan them for me. I can't wear watches either, they break within hours of me putting them on. Yes...........I'm strange.
16:54 on 27/04/2012
While I do not condone shoplifting people might feel they are working for the store by doing someones job for them, I do not agree with self checkouts and do not use them if at all possible, this is doing people out of a job.
14:37 on 27/04/2012
wouldnt happen in "open all hours"sorry going back to an era where personal interaction was the normal.surely we all love the bleeping sound continuosly droning in the background, progress apparently.See the price to pay for cheaper products, fewer staff more theft, id prefer staff thanks.
13:56 on 27/04/2012
I really love using the self-service checkouts because when I put a note in and get change back, it feels like I've won money on a slot machine!
