Real Madrid Defeated By Bayern Munich In Champions League Semi-Final: Jose Mourinho Always Lose On Penalties (VIDEO)

WATCH: No Way Jose - Mourinho's Shootout Defeats (VIDEO)

Real Madrid's Champions League dream was scuppered by Bayern Munich, as the German club did that German thing and won 3-1 on penalties.

For Jose Mourinho this was an all-too-familiar feeling. He has seen his teams lose four times on penalty shootouts now, and after Sergio Ramos' Madrid Airport bound gaffe invited Bastian Schweinsteiger to book Bayern's final berth at their own stadium, the Portuguese coach could have been forgiven for heading down the tunnel before the winning kick.

Three times, in three different competitions, did Mourinho's Chelsea fail on penalties as nerves beat his players from 12 yards out.

And we have to go all the way back to October 2005 for the first of a miserable quartet:

CHELSEA 4-5 CHARLTON, 2005

Aside from Barcelona beating the 10-man Blues in the Champions League later on in 2005/06, this was Mourinho's only home defeat in his three-and-a-bit seasons at Stamford Bridge. But because it was on penalties, it didn't really count, he wryly insisted.

LIVERPOOL 4-1 CHELSEA, 2007

Mourinho was reported to have described Liverpool as a small club and a cup team before this Champions League semi-final. And the Reds bit back, as, for the third season in succession, they knocked the Special One's Chelsea side out of a cup competition at the semi-final stage. Jose was half-right.

MANCHESTER UNITED 3-0 CHELSEA, 2008

Inconsequential, given it was the Community Shield, but Chelsea didn't even score once past Edwin van der Sar. The Dutchman repelled efforts from Claudio Pizarro, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Frank Lampard, as Mourinho was caught smirking with embarrassment. Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney meanwhile all scored with ease.

But he did win with Inter against Roma in 2008...
