The younger sister of a Tory MP has defected as a Conservative councillor today to join the Liberal Democrats.

Sarah Dinenage, sister of Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage, has decided to swap sides just two weeks before the local elections at which she is understood to be standing down.

The sisters are both the daughters of ITV newsreader and local TV personality Fred Dinenage.

Sarah Dinenage said that she made the decision because of too much in-fighting within the Conservative group which is in opposition in the Liberal Democrat-controlled city council.

She said that she had not discussed the move with her elder sister who herself attracted controversy at the last general election when her image was allegedly airbrushed on a campaigning leaflet.

Sarah Dinenage told the Portsmouth News: "We share the same last name but we are very different people. This isn't something that is against the Tory party nationally."

Wow, Tory to Lib-dem. What a difference. NOT. All the same hopeless people drifting out of each others political monopoly of power. Not a real idea between the lot of them. Just the hope of being elected and becoming an overpaid political Z list celebrity at the taxpayers expense .

The Rt Hon Chris Huhne looks like he will be out on his ear, she can try for his seat if clegg makes them take her as there candidate then the conalition will not even break step, remember the sick party have lost as many voters in all the by-elections in the last 2 years as the lie/dems, this could be a cunning plan to cover all bases.

She's getting ready for parliament next time around, the Hanoverian could not careless what they pretend to be to get in. The only reason the Rt Hon David Laws is not in the sick party is because he is Gay, no other reason!

The Councillor daughter of an ITV newsreader - I thought Leveson was conducting an inquiry into the link between the media and politicians?

this is a news item because?
if any representative decides to swap parties then they should have to resign their seat and a new election should then be called.

Not so. In our system we are, in theory, voting for a person, not a party.

Like most politicians she can't see writing on the wall. Days of big 3 are rapidly drawing to a close. They are all more or less liberal democrats and have had countless chances between them to improve life for ordinary people. They have failed every time and people now want MPs and councillors who represent them, not business, the unions, Europe, minorities or the party.
UKIP, other new parties and independents will take off and we will be rid of these inward looking, self serving, incompetent plastic politicians at last (I hope)

Even Rattus Norvegicus of the Muroidea family are more intelligent than to join a sinking ship.

That`s what I was thinking. Not a very bright move considering UKIP are over taking them in the polls.
